I'm not arguing the club knows it's guilty or is anticipating any kind of punishment and is spending to save face, I dont believe thats the case.
I'm saying that if the club are of the opinion that they are innocent they will most likely work based on the assumption that they will be cleared of what they are being accused of until they hear otherwise. To work in any other way would be expecting a negative outcome, with other words more or less an admission of guilt.
It's not so much about saving face and more about why would the club act like they anticipate a punishment if they believe they have done nothing wrong? I would argue it's not a good business strategy to act like you are guilty of multi hundred million fraud if you are of the opinion you are not.
In my opinion, the club spending lots of money just says they are expecting to be cleared of all or most charges, not that they necessarily know they will be.
