North Stand Construction Discussion

Are they not behind the original schedule? You'd have thought it would be in the contractors' interest to stay on, and get the job finished at the earliest opportunity?
Think it’s a case some things can’t be done any quicker Jim. With the temporary supports slowly but surly being removed it’s a case of wait and see. But agree you would hope this was a 24/7 job.

May be the weather forecast is the reason, but the recent communications from Sisk indicated they would be needing 24/7 to remove the old roof and finish the new roof before next season, and also make sure the pitch has time to recover. It seems a little tardy so far.

There is nothing really to suggest that. As things are.

Doesn’t take a lot of wind to have to suspend crane lifts.

Isn't West Ham at exactly 60k? Also, isn't our stadium currently at 55k?
West Ham's capacity at their new ground has a complicated history. It can be configured to have a capacity of up to 67,000 but the lease, or agreement is set at 62,500. Here's an explanation from West Ham https://www.whufc.com/news/articles...ed-granted-permission-london-stadium-capacity

I believe City's record attendance at the Etihad was 54,603 against Leicester City in 2016. And you will find references online to a capacity of 55k. Since then we took out 3 rows of seats at the front of the ground to facilitate large advertising hoardings. The North Stand expansion may have also temporarily reduced some capacity at the back of the 2nd tier. In 2023/24, before work on the North Stand started we averaged 53,346. When we applied for planning permission for the new stand, the documentation described the capacity as "54,048 following the expansion of the South Stand in 2014".

This season some websites give our average attendance to be 52,847. In February 2025 we played Liverpool at the Etihad and the official attendance was 52,803. There would have been some empty seats due to segregation and there would have been some loss of seats due to work on the North Stand.

The covering letter put before MCC for the North Stand expansion said, "The expansion of the Etihad Stadium North Stand to provide an additional net capacity of 7,910 and an increase in the overall stadium capacity of up to 61,958".

Note pre works capacity of 54,048 + 7,910 results in 61,958.

Wasn't the original plan to have it ready for the start of next season?
No. It was always ready for December, occupied in January, for the stand. With the rest to follow like the season after. At least what has been put out in public, and that has been consistent.

The start of the season came from an offline claim by those with connections, that there was an internal target (entirely plausible) for the construction team to aim for to better the timeline ifnthey could, and the accummulated chat thereafter.

Regarding the North Stand, are we broadly on schedule for January?

I am not seeing anything that would make me think otherwise, so I think so myself, yeah. But I don't know anything beyond what is out in the public domain.

Think August looks a push if I'm honest, but maybe the bare stand with toilets/escapes with concourses and BoH to follow isn't impossible. Beyond that seems overly ambitious, at least as things ate just now.

Whether they want the ballache of having to manage that, that's another story.

I think any August opening would have involved releasing a few rows of seats at the front of the expansion, but I’m struggling to see that happening since the internals look pretty bare bones at the moment. I could still see a phased opening but towards the end of the year. It might depend on what the demand for tickets is like…!

Fair enough. But I'd have argued the toss that I read somewhere, around the start of the work, that the aim was for it to be ready for the first game of next season.

I like your numbers.

At the Open Doors event in March Sisk said they had some issues with the ground works which were more complexed than they had expected, which put the them back. But they said they would catch up. After that 5 week spell of great weather in April and in May, I'm sure Sisk did catch up?

No, Marvin is correct. At the start of the season our capacity was declared to the PL as 52,900 and was then reduced to around 52,600 once the works increased. Upon completion our capacity will increase to 61,958 plus the executive suites overlooking the pitch.
