Horrific is the answer.True - but I’ve sometimes wondered what those 10 seconds or so would be like.

Will the rest of that aircraft type have to be grounded now, or will that be after the FDR has been examined ?
Hopefully the cause is pilot error rather than a mechanical fault.
It has a great record.1st fatalities since it went operational in 2011. Considering the amount of 787's flying, it's an excellent safety record.

That’s a crazy story. I guess the height doesn’t really matter as you’d reach terminal velocity pretty quickly, it’d be how and on what you landed on.![]()

You’ve summed up why I don’t fly. Everything is out of my control 33,000 feet in the air. Fuck that.True - but I’ve sometimes wondered what those 10 seconds or so would be like.
Plane crashes are fairly unique in the fact that you are fully aware you are completely fucked and there is nothing you can do about it.
If you’re in a car crash for example, your thought process in those final seconds would be purely focussed on trying to evade whatever you’re about to hit / avoid serious injury. Likewise other life threatening situations such as getting caught in a terrorist attack - you are fully focused on finding a way not to die.
Plane crash - you have however many seconds/minutes to contemplate inevitable death.
The flight is always the least stressful part of my journey precisely for that reason, especially flying UK to West Coast of the USA. From wheels-up to wheels-down, the only thing I need to worry about in the next 11 hours is grabbing the attention of the cabin staff when the drinks trolley comes round. You’ve summed up why I don’t fly. I'm willing to almost bet a dollar that it's inadequate maintenance rather than pilot error or something like that. The RAT being deployed certainly points to as such..787 pilot here
Very, very sad to see. All sorts of theories floating around - many of them clearly total rubbish. Beware of talking heads on news channels presented as ‘experts’. Give such ‘experts’ as much caution as we give ‘experts’ talking about City. Hopefully they can recover the FDR (black box) and get some info out asap.

Hearing that, and I know the counter can be that whilst I am in control of my car, I’m not in control of whoever decides to smash into me from whatever cause. I last flew 2016 and I hated every blood sucking minute of it. Was never an issue when I was younger. The flight is always the least stressful part of my journey precisely for that reason, especially flying UK to West Coast of the USA. Safe to say shoukd I ever have to fly again, 11a will be my seat

Ryanair will be putting the prices up on seat 11A as we speakThink seat 11A might be the one to go for when flying.
Amazing that anyone survived that.Reports that a British man survived who was sat in 11A
