his 2024/25 heat map would suggest he doesn’t play inverted currently and if he doesn’t currently not sure what would suggest he can do it or city would use him that way. It’s more likely to me that the fullbacks will play high and wide with tucked in wingers I.e. marmoush and Cherki or Foden. If we were to play savio or Doku then it would create the opportunity for inverted fullbacks but I think Gvardiol and Rico would be preferred in that situation.

I’m not saying btw he wouldn’t be an improvement on Nunes or we shouldn’t sign him- just I don’t get the hype or the fee particularly aside him being HG. He is obviously the clubs preference and like you say they know best, but I think we walk if the fee is 60m+ up front personally and I wouldn’t blame them regardless of the need for a rb. But it’s all opinions.

i think this will happen.

There is no smoke without fire. He’s been linked for a long time now.

People on this forum make me laugh have we follow the story the media tell us.

They will obviously use their outlets to say:
Howe loves him.
Player wants to stay etc.

Behind closed doors though money talks.
All players have a price.
 
I struggle to see Newcastle selling this summer at a fee we'd be willing to pay. He has 3 years left on his deal, is firmly established as a starter now, breaking into the national set-up and they've just won a trophy and qualified for the Champions League. If they need to sell for PSR reasons (which they don't), they'd be looking to shift their reserves like they did last summer.

The question is, do we have alternatives or are we willing to wait a year and try again next summer when he may only have 2 years left and they may not be in the strong position they're in now?

I'm not sure I want us going into next season with our current right back options on the off chance we land Livramento next summer.

Of course it's not. And that's why I suspect this deal never happens at the price mentioned, same as Gibbs-White.

"Just pay what it takes" is luckily an attitude that exists on football forums but not in football club boardrooms (apart from the rags).

We need a right back, that much is clear. Hopefully Hugo has got a good list of possible options in his little black book.

I think the added cost though is the homegrown aspect and his age? £70m would be huge short term but he’s 22 years old and could be with us 10 years?

The hype is because he’s such a good one v one defender and also because he’s young and English. This lad has got it there is no doubt about it for me. The way he handled both Salah and Doku shows that as not many fullbacks in football can do that against those 2. Supposed to have a great attitude too and obviously used to the league already.
 
Decent amount of noise about this which is a positive sign.

Newcastle wont sell the player can be seen two ways - either they are negotiating for a better price or they just wont sell the player.

Like Bruno I think this will be incredibly hard but find it positive we haven't moved on. Shows we have had something which makes us feel it's possible. Another positive is how Khaldoon addressed previous business and said we weren't good enough at recruiting after missing out on players. If/when we move on from this I think it will be obvious and I like to think based of those comments it will be for another great player.
 
One thing we can probably agree on though is that Hugo isn’t going to fuck around? If it’s too expensive or it seems that Newcastle just won’t sell he will move on quickly! Aina the next option if we need homegrown?

More seems to be made of Livramento's home grown status than his actual ability. Which is quite telling.

How much of the clamour to sign him is because he's the player people rate and want at right back, versus needing a shiny new toy and being fixated on a quota that we can absolutely only adhere to by signing a home grown right back?

Might as well be describing Aaron Wan-Bissaka if you're looking for a home grown right back that's had a decent game against Salah and Doku at some point, whilst being familiar with the Premier League.

And no, I don't think we should sign Wan-Bissaka either, although he wouldn't cost £80m!

I think he’s a very good player as well mate but I do agree that the extra price tag will be also down to him being homegrown.

Well the only other real link was Cambiaso in January and id rather have Livramento based of ability alone.

I always thought he used to be but then like many others became a bit hit and miss.

One thing thats become clear is after Berrada left a lot of leaks stopped and now with Viana in there seems to be a few decent sources but Baileys certainly isn't one. Romano has been good for us recently, as has Sasha.

He's not, but L'Équipe did mention back in April that we were interested in him (Liverpool were also very keen before signing Frimpong, btw). He almost joined Bayern in last summer's window.
L'Équipe is a reliable source when it comes to transfers involving French players.
 
Sildillia looks a big lad as well doesn’t he? On that report kindly linked by @bell_mcfc , he’s entering the last year of his contract as well? Dippers were looking at him before Frimpong
