82 | Rico Lewis - 2025/26

Regardless of what you think about him, that was a total and utter disgrace of a decision!
Bad decision - but understandable. The ref saw Rico's cleats hit Samuel Obeng's head - after Rico left his feet and made a sliding challenge.

Facts are that Obeng lunged into a tackle on Rico and it's Obeng's fault that he got cleats to the head.

Rico's challenge was clean and not dangerous.

What was dangerous is that Obeng went in hard and then put himself into harm's way.

So... for me... understandable that the on-field red card was shown - but disappointing that the VAR didn't at least ask the ref to review the incident on screen.

No way that it was a foul on Rico at all - let alone a red-card foul.

We sign some great midfielders in the last 6 months. Seeing Rico als inverted full back was a bit disappointing. This didn’t work in the seasons before. I hope he stays as backup for the future. He slows down our build up and takes place where we already have few players while passing. Brings nothing for attack. Very vulnerable while defending. Pep needs to end this experiment.

Here i was thinking folks would be here raving about his movement and how he created that chance for Haaland ...

Even if not that, perhaps a discussion on whether he was done unfairly by the ref might have been understandable...

But no, its the same old claims recycled :(

Depressing!

He nearly created another very good chance for Haaland too but was unlucky due to a great interception, he was good going forward especially but there's still a bit of rust around this team, with a little more cohesion around him and Rico playing how he did yesterday there's clearly a role for him in the squad.

Our opponents yesterday might be Moroccan but they aren't total mugs they regularly challenge for the African Champions League, so it was a good opener for us not too hard or easy they're like a Championship side rather than non league level, unlike the laughably bad Auckland who got thumped 10-0 by Bayern the other day.

Back on topic the red card decision against Rico Lewis was an absolute disgrace too, he had a decent game anyone trying to rip him apart based on yesterday are total piss takers. These people are no better than the dickheads who used to blame Richard Edghill for everything, remember one dickhead at Maine Road blame Edghill for a goal when he wasn't even playing.

As for someone here listening to a rag fan telling him Rico Lewis isn't good enough for them? You put up with that while not handing their arses to them? Sort your head out.

They've had so many great talent hype jobs, these players played for them or were all going to be stars..

Tom stupidly(certainly wasn't cleverly), Tuanzebe, fosu mensah, Brandon Williams, borthwich Jackson, Tyler Blackett, Tahi Chong, Zidane Iqbal.

Don't ever let any rag fan lecture you on talent with the shite they spout, those fuckers raved about Januszaj being a world class talent.

Hung out to dry at RB, not his fault and damaging his career, okay he is getting play time but very negative time, he will make a good PL midfield player not with us but all the best if that's the case

sometimes he was just in the overcrowded center and didn’t give Reis a chance to pass outside to the right and limited his options.
I will never get how pep allows that.

Well, most reds don't actually understand 21st century football and want their team to play like they did in the 90s, so I wouldn't care about their opinions.
Even if they did understand football, i'd still disagree with them on principle.

The only thing they can ever say that's right, is that we are better than them :)

If you are singling out one player as the reason for a relatively poor season, you are wide of the mark. Have a think about the season and list what went wrong, then revisit.
Not singling him out but it's clear to me that if we want to get back to winning titles then we need someone better than Rico Lewis.

That's no slant on the lad, he's an OK Premier league player but we need more than OK.

The thing with other young players like Doku and Savinho is you can see some talent there, they're still rough around the edges and need to work on end product. Maybe they'll never develop it and be moved on, but if it clicks, then we've got some really good players that can really worry opponents.

With Lewis I don't really see him excelling at anything. Let's hope starts showing some real progression. Still, he's a decent utility player, which there's always a place for in every squad.

I'd certainly hope to see better than him coming out of our academy more often though.

He is a squad player at best who worrying gets way too much game time .

I agree

But Pep seems to rate him and he's forgotten more than I'll ever know, so let's see how he goes.

Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised by what he progresses into, because I'm struggling to see any potential major quality right now. I don't really like saying that about a lad that is from the academy but you can only be honest about what you see.

He plays for City, he's clearly not shit - will always have positives, but on the whole he weakens us, not, as I've said, because he's poor, but his positioning, vision and decision making aren't quite good enough.
If that depresses you. So be it.

His positioning, vision and decision making are 3 of his better attributes. He doesn't weaken us. When he plays we just play full ack to his strengths.. Decision making, cohesion football and quick thinking.
