If not Gundogan and Kovacic then then who goes? We can't keep everyone It seems Gundogan has an offer he’s happy with so makes sense he’s one that goes. We didn’t trigger his extension it automaically triggered, not the same thing.

Keep the central midfield depth and look to either Akanji or to lesser extent Ake (although he is more valuable in quota terms) or either Savinho or Doku (again not the most easiest of decisions). If the intention was to move Gundogan on then why trigger his contract for another season?. We won't get much of a transfer fee if we did sell him now and would have been better to allow him to move out of contract.

Like the post you answered to said, I think I read Gündogans extension was automatically triggered after playing a certain amount of games.

We didn’t trigger an extension, it got triggered automatically. It wasn’t a choice, doubt we’d ask for a fee.Central midfield is fine with Rodri, Gonzalez, Bernardo, Reijnders, O’Reilly all capable of playing in those 2 positions. Kovacic and Gundogan are the obvious candidates along with Akanji or Nunes to make the spaces we need to make.

We should have used him more sparingly if that was the case. With the extra signing he can still provide valuable cover while they adjust to life at CIty. Same with Kova. The 4 players in the leadership group are going to be used more regularly.
 
Just out of interest, hypothetically, if none of the senior players could be moved this summer, would we have to loan out Khusanov, Reis, Echeverri, and Gonzalez?

How we got here and why he played last season is fairly obvious but is irrelevant we are where we are, and as we have interest in him he’s most likely to be the first of a few to leave.We haven’t got room in the squad to keep them as cover, while others adjust,it’s that simple.

It would have been better letting him go on a free along with Kev if that was the case. Still if push comes to shove then Kovacic stays. Got to keep some cover back.

Depends what you mean by hypothetically.

The squad would be too big , so something would have to give

But by the squad size rukes. ( if that’s what you mean ) no one would have to leave.

The first 3 are all under 21 for premier league rules.

But not all could be registered for champs league squad.

But even if no one left us this season , every player would be able to play in the premier league.

That’s what I wondered. Likewise, senior players could presumably be omitted from the Champions League squad if there were question marks over their physical ability to play 3 games in 8 days.
