27 | Matheus Nunes - 2025/26

RWB is a good fit for him. I'd like to see him be a bit more decisive when he gets the ball in good areas, there are times that he's played in towards the byline and his instinct is to turn back and hold rather than cross the ball or drive towards goal

I think he'll be a useful player again for us this season

Players like Nunes are RWB are fine...providing they are the only player out of position. A la Delph, Akanji, Zinny over the years.

Our problem last year was that we had multiple players out of position. That is untenable if you are challenging for the title.

I think Ait Nouri showed today what the standard of a proper fullback should be and unfortunately i dont think nunes is anywhere near it. Hes the current best option but i dont know where we go from here with him…

Agreed. We need balance and quality. We're aiming to be back at the standard we were at - would Nunes get in at Real? Liverpool? Bayern? He wouldn't be anywhere near

Would Zinchenko, or Delph. Name any league or champions league winning team they will all have players that you could ask would they get in? I’m all for a new right back if we can get the right one, but sticking with what we have doesn’t mean we can’t win the league.

Delph wasn't part of the treble season. Random to mention him when discussing getting back to our best. Zinch was a great squad player that proved his worth in matches against PSG and Villa off the top off my head. When Nunes gets to even that level, you've got a point

Real, Bayern, Liverpool, even Arsenal - all have solid fullbacks both sides

Nunes is already at that point. He may not be flashy but he has good line breaking passes and crosses in him.

That's the calculation Pep makes when he plays him.. is the team better with is production or weaker with his mistakes? And he seems to think Nunes can cover and provide assists vs a non top 5 side that simply parks the bus vs us.

And judging from his numbers.. he justifies being in the team. If you didn't know.. he contributed 14 G+A last season and was our 3rd leading assist man.

He was a premier league winner, which at the moment is our only real target. Will be a couple of years before I expect us to be ready to win a CL or challenge for a treble again. We may not win a treble again for a long time if ever there's a reason it’s only been done twice.
I’m sure if you look at the PSG team though there are players 12 months ago you’d have been asking would he get in the Madrid, Bayern or liverpool team.

PSG have improved - are you saying we shouldn't?

Let's let last season go.
It was a season decimated by injury and illness, with key players missing for months on end and those who remained, already on a natural come-down from record-breaking performance, played far too much and way beyond their reserves. That was not us.
Today is a new day - let the mighty blues rise once more.

No I’m saying we should and we will. I’m also saying if we can’t get the right right back this summer then we go with want we have if that happens and if Nunes continues to improve he could be part of a premier league winning team.
PSG improved, after a first half of the season in the CL in which they were as bad as us, they improved with players many thought the first half of last season weren’t that great.

Too many on here are incapable of moving on from issues which have happened in the past and have seemingly " scarred them for life ".

From watching my first City game at Maine Road in 1954 to present day, I have seen plenty of fuck-ups and yet I am still looking forward to seeing us again when the PL kicks off again.

Yeah I may have some gripes and whines but ultimately it comes down to this..

I support the club!

No ifs, ands or buts!

Unfortunately, there doesn't really exist Ait Nouri like fullbacks on the right.

If they do, they are definitely hidden gems.

Tbh the fullback market is fairly mediocre overall, which is why Nunes stands out.

With the move towards identifying younger players, there’s every likelihood that someone will appear on the radar over the course of the coming season. Until they’ve been identified and deemed an improvement, however, best just carry on with what we’ve got. Nunes strikes me as someone who needs to feel appreciated, so constant questioning of his suitability will only undermine him. Once the window closes, we should keep playing him and hope that he continues to repay the confidence.

Nunes overall was the better of the two wingbacks last night. Any hint of danger they posed us came down Ait-Nouri's side, Nunes had his side on total lock down, he was better in possession too he just wasn't as eye catching with dribbling.

Goes without saying not to piss money away in any position "just because". Nunes himself has hopefully taught the club not to do that again.

it's better to he makes a mistake - and that doesn't take very long. Not clever or good enough for midfield and not good enough at the back. Anything above a £20m offer should see him go
