Obviously it’s only 1 game and obviously you can still drive a bus through our centre backs should you so wish, but even so it’s impossible to not be excited by what we produced, knowing that we can only improve.
We actually had a coordinated high squeeze which was forcing Juventus to play longer than they wanted to, which was allowing us to win the ball back and sustain attacks. Something which has been absent for maybe 2 years.
We saw a notable increase in forward passes and had 3rd man runners to then receive layoffs.
We had genuine width from full back, but also the flexibility whereby both full backs were both holding width and also inverting at times, with Doku and Savinho having the same flexibility to play inside or outside. Not a good game for the “Pep doesn’t like freedom” brigade.
The new signings are literally plug and play, which is exactly what was required. I think Cherki will probably need more time than Ait-Nouri and Reijnders, but not so much time where he can’t contribute from the off.
The vibes around the squad seem immaculate as well, and this is important. Them living together 24/7 at the moment is no doubt helping to bring them closer and create bonds with the new staff too.
I think we’re back.
