Juventus (N) | CWC | Post Match Thread

I didn't want us anywhere near this competition, because I thought that we'd possibly be embarrassed and knocked back for next season. It might still happen - we've only been under sporadic defensive pressure so far - but it certainly doesn't have that feel, at the moment.

Nevertheless, the fact that we can at least compete means that we do get to see the new players in the heat of battle and Pep's team will learn more about everybody in this environment than they would in any number of training sessions.

Sure beats meaningless friendlies with 15 substitutions per team for nothing more than commercial reasons.

Seems to be such a good vibe among the players too, so different to last season when I had the feeling that some were probably quite happy to see that they weren't on the team sheet.

The great danger with tournament football is that you can play 3 good games and have an indifferent 4th and crash out. I know this is common knowledge but we should be aware as a team is often most vulnerable after a good win.

Why not celebrate that performance? We’ve not seen one like it for a while, and it also looks like our new signings have been here forever, especially RaN. There was a lot to be happy about and get giddy about for the season coming.
I agree, I'm the first to resort to 'Typical City' especially last season ... but last night had me purring at the football we played at times.

I know the rest of the Prem 'don't care' about this Competition, but if they secretly watched that they'll be fearing the worst for their own side.

I'm interested in your view that this was a second string Juventus and that hey clearly "weren't up for it". We played Juve last December in the CL and lost 2-0. Of the team that beat us then 9 of the 11 appeared last night. Six of them started and and 3 were subbed, being replaced by 3 others who played last December. In total both teams used 5 subs and this was because of the extreme heat and humidity in the case of Juventus (as well as City) rather than to any lack of desire. Juventus will not have enjoyed any part of last night's drubbibg.

Your judgement that our defence is a shambles seems harsh and hasty as well. Our 'keeper has been an integral part of our attempts to build attacks when he gets the ball from Pep's first day at the club and it has worked and is working sensationally well but we do make (very few) mistakes, and Eddie made one last night. We can't find any other goalkeeper or defender who hasn't made a mistake in distribution. The second Juve goal was a good goal which exploited our high line. This can and does happen but it is entirely different to periods last season when even some mediocre teams seemed to able to run through midfield and our defence at will - Juventus managed 4 shots all night in the club world cup, not the Europa league.

Everyone knows that the conditions are unlikely to be replicated in our league season, that fatigue may have been more of a factor last night than it will be during our season and that City are a new side building connections and team play BUT If City can play consistently at last night's level we won't be far off the PL title if we don't win it. Last night's was a very impressive performance, not a defensive shambles, against a good Juve team.
Some on here have no sense of reality and are clueless and I’m referring to the person you replied to and not you

The many injuries were the problem, especially Rodri's.

It's like many posters had forgotten how many injuries we had, and focused entirely on energy, pace, movement, and the like.

If we had a normal season injuries wise, if Rodri was available, we'd have competed for the title.
I haven’t forgotten about the injuries, it’s obvious to anyone how much injuries hampered us over the season.
But our squad had aged badly.
We had next to fuck all creativity cos everything we did was at a snails pace.
We had the same problem defensively.
We couldn’t do the fundamentals of a Pep team.
Hard work with and without the ball.
I disagree that without the injuries we’d be competing for the league.
It was inevitable we’d hit the wall eventually.
We also wasn’t the only ones to suffer injuries, which ended up with a very poor league overall.
Yep without the injuries we’d have been better but so would other teams too.

I’m really pleased for Nunes, he seems to have settled in nicely after a dodgy start and looking the business now. My only moan is that Erling first touch is shocking for a player of his level . Phil looks rejuvenated and Rodri back gives the team its mojo back
Erling took a couple of balls down like prime Mahrez today.

What’s going on? I can’t believe everyone is celebrating this like we are fantastic again.
We played a second string Juve side who clearly weren’t up for it.

They still scored 2. Our defence is a shambles.

I hope we are, the energy was noticeable and some of the forward players seem to be on it.

As a team though it’s so easy to counter on us. It’s just not being addressed.
Im sure it'll be sorted especially when you look at the celebrations from Pep and his assistant in the dugout. They know the importance of this game and really were ecstatic as we were scoring at will it seems. But your point about the defence is well taken and I cannot believe they will not figure out what needs to be addressed.

I was thinking after last night's game, who and how Pep is going to reduce this squad. It's going to be a nightmare for players having to leave, Stones Bobb Kovacic Grealish Gundogan Lewis Ake Walker Phillips Mcatee will be the ones

I think I counted 34 players we have and Pep wants 17 first-team players and maybe youth and squad players, making up the 25 players we need to finalise both Premier League and Champions League list

This competition is massive for everyone in Asia, Middle East, Far Asia and especially South America and Mexico.

The typical British destain for anything invented by " Johnny foreigner" is still alive and well!!!!

The whole City organisation is enjoying the USA. Having worked there for a lot of my time between 1989 and 2008 I can tell you the 6 star accommodation and welcoming attention from Americans for Brits will be something totally different from their sojourns to the odd stay over for a ECL game or odd WC or EC qualifier!

These lads are enjoying it qand their families and partners are there too.

First game in 1964, season ticket since 1972, the worst thing you could call me. Fucking good job you were joking otherwise I’d be limping after you and having a word!
We could use our walking sticks like light sabres, First game in 1970 the same year I got my Umbro city kit in a box, so I have a few years on you but time has not been kind. I feel for the older generation of City fans like my Grandad who never got to see all this success (and the rags lack off) Apologies for the name calling but I think I am scarred from high school by being called gay by folk I have since discovered are gay.

It seemed weird watching a City match when the predominant accent was American. Funnily it seemed even stranger coming from the Juve fans who were mainly Italian Americans. Some good banter between the fans. Strangest of all was probably the sight of a couple of fans wearing United shirts in among City fans

I’d be surprised if Lewis and Bobb leave. I also think Pep would be happy for Gundogan to stay. I think Ilkay would be happy to make do with reduced game time would be good off of the pitch.
