Before Elvis there was basically 'black' gospel and rhythm'n'blues music and 'white' country & western/rockabilly style music. There was no common ground.

What Elvis did, when he recorded That's Alright Mama, a 'black' song in white rockabilly style, was bridge the gap and create modern rock'n'roll. I'd also say he was the first real front-man, who attracted attention by his charisma and hip-swinging. His successors like Freddie Mercury and Bruce Springsteen owe him a lot.

You should change your username to substitute the 'With' with 'Very'. ;-)

The Cribs are really good but it's hard to say where to start. They have a very loyal fanbase. I really like the album In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull. They also had the album when Johnny Marr joined them "Ignore The Ignorant". Their first 2 albums are good but quite lo-fi and of their time. Although they're good albums, sometimes I don't think it is the best gateway into them because I think they expanded their sound for the better later on.

Did they cut Rod Stewart off? I’m watching on Iplayer and it cut off to two people talking on a settee:-/
 
Talk about double standards by the BBC given the 'outage' they have 'created' by their Glastonbury coverage I tried a post on HYS on the BBC Sports website. Somebody posted what might be an appropriate name following Henman Hill, Murray Mound for something for Draper. I suggested Draper Dunny. Guess what. I've been banned!

Incidentally it's a great story how that song came about. Sam Phillips, who owned the Sun label, had heard about Elvis and got him in, but wasn't impressed. About a year later he tried again but couldn't find the right song.

He went out for a smoke to decide what to do and he heard Elvis and the backing band doing That's Alright Mama. He rushed back into the studio and asked them what they'd just been doing, to which they apparently replied they were messing about. Phillips then said "Well mess about again" and recorded it. I think they did it a few times but the first take was the best and got released.
