Hugo Viana | Director of Football

none can get a game.
This is traditionally a big metric for how sporting directors are judged within industry btw. How many minutes their signings actually play. Its not their job to make them play well, thats the coach, but if the coach is using them then they've generally been considered a success

Desperate for a right back and we need to fuck off Gundogan, Akanji and, if it were me, I’d have fucked off Bernardo too but obviously that won’t happen. Would put Ake and Stones out to pasture too
Unfortunately I can’t see it happening they’ll most likely barring injuries be in the side first game of the new season

100% awesome additions.

I think questions will and should be asked regarding Khusanov, Reis and Nico G however. £120m or so worth of players there and none can get a game.
Don’t really think khusanov and nico g have done much wrong when they have played barring 10 mins from khus.
To me they weren’t chosen or wanted by pep hence the lack of playing time .
To a degree we are still in transition, that should have started last year , but pep’s loyalty has cost us which is understandable.
If that same loyalty exists this season with gundo , akanji etc and we continue to ship easy goals with slow build up and balls over the top , then questions seriously need to be answered regarding pep going forward .

All very young foreigners trying to adapt to both the PL and Pepball.

Give them a minute.

Need to cull the herd now the CWC is over.

Ake - 10M€
Akanji - 10M€
Stones - 20M€
Gundo - Free
Grealish 45M€
McAtee 35M€

That’s 120M€, which covers the Summer spend. Add in the CWC money, and we are at about 165M€, so have money for an attacking RB.

If we get one, maybe we ship out Nunes for 45M€, too, and bank some money or fill in any holes Pep sees, such as a back-up for Cherki next season after Bernardo leaves, unless he moves Nunes forward and does bring in a RB!

Ederson/Ortega/Bettinelli

Nunes/Lewis/NEW RB
Dias/Khusanov
Gvardiol/Reis
RAN/O’Reilly

Cherki/Bernardo
Rodri/Kovacic/Gonzales
Reijnders/Foden

Savinho/Bobb
Haaland/Marmoush
Doku/Echeverri

I’d take that squad right now!

Two important months ahead.
The defensive midfield situation needs to be addressed, because as things stand we’re going to be pinning all our hopes on Rodri again and that would be folly.

It feels like a pivotal moment, regarding who leaves and what seems like the continued need to bring in another central midfielder.

Do we move the likes of Ake, Stones and Gundogan on and trust the new signings or will they prefer to let some of the younger players go out on loan? It’s not clear to me which way they’ll go.

Feels like we’re none the wiser after the CWC, which has been too much of a mixed bag to draw any conclusions from. It simply reminded us how much we need Rodri back on top form and how we’re still struggling if he’s not there. Reijnders looks like a very good addition but we could do with another like him.

As I say, two important months ahead.

If we were going to rely on the young players next season, then I would have expected them to have featured more prominently in this tournament. As it stands, however, Guardiola has continued instead to rely on his experienced players, suggesting many of them may be staying.

I think there could be a few surprise departures.

We have had Bobb, Khus, Reis, Cherki, O'Reilly, Lewis all underused on this tour, maybe for different reasons. We won't know how much Echeverri would have played because of his injury. The core of the team have included Bernie, Gundo, Ake, Akanji. I can see at least three of the youngsters being shipped to reduce squad numbers. Pep will never abandon his high defensive line so it would seem sensible to only have defenders that can play it. Akanji, Dias are poor. Ake, bless him, can't run anymore. All good servants but they really do need to go.
