Al Hilal (N) | CWC | Post Match Thread

What started out as a decent first half despite missing several good chances turned in to a disaster second half and extra time...Dias for me is a major worry, gone from being a world class defender his form in the last 10 months has been shockingly bad
Savinho I know he's young and can improve but he really needs to toughen up,shits out of challenges constantly, gives up running for the ball whenever in a foot race, should be third choice at best behind foden, cherki,Bobb.
As good as a first half we had the warning signs were there they had a few chances on the brake

Pep has just continued where he left off last season, one good/decent half and one poor/disastrous one. For me, he is the main culprit the team gets on after HT so unprepared and robot-like after conceding. Both Dias and Akanji had some good recoveries last night as last men, but once Pep pushes them so far forward it's free for all.
When it comes to individual players, my main concern is Gvardiol defending actually, he's been all over the place since Messi turned him inside out at the WC, he seems to have issues with staying focused; and Savi(nh)o, I really don't know where we go from here, the very moment Nunes was subbed he was gone as well in all but the body.
But I can see everybody, including Liverpool and apart form Ars and Brighton, playing some version of "the bus" against us, they did it last season as. It is easier for USA and Israel to bust Iranian nuclear facilities than for us to penetrate 5-5-0/5-4-1.
I share your concerns about Gvardiol . When he was being played out of position as a full-back he had some excuse but much of the problems were about his inability to read the game and a lack of pace. Now he's playing in is natural position his lack of pace is still being exposed. I don't think the partnership with Dias is the way forward and maybe Dias is the problem

According to EA Sports FC 2024 Player Ratings:
Dias Pace is 67, Acceleration 65, Sprint Speed 68
Vitor Reiss stats unknown- perhaps Not many games to go on .
Khusanov Pace is 71, Acceleration 62, Sprint Speed 79 . Stats are based on his time in Lens 23/24 . I'd say Sprint Speed higher now.
I think Khusanov is faster than then stats suggest. When I’ve seen him he looks rapid.

Let down?
Worse defensive display?
Fuck me has the sun got to people on here or what?

These are all glorified friendlies. What is your post all about!

Try thinking about the fact we've got a nice break coming up where we could have started the season on our arse if we'd gone all the way in this competition.
If that’s your coping mechanism then so be it. It’s certainly not mine nor the 1000 or so Blues who have spent fortunes to get out here to support the team.

Typical City.

Keep me up until 5am and still lose.

Only typical city could fuck up the "easy side" of the draw.

The game itself was fantastic for the neutral. Not so much for us.

I am an old fart so can someone explain to me why modern keepers are trained to parry the ball away rather than catch it? Eddie's performance reminded of the Real Madrid game where he just pushes the ball into the direction of the opposition players again.

A great opportunity missed to win a new trophy I doubt we'll be in next time.

Ah well.

At least the squad can have a few weeks off now before coming back better.

Let's start by speaking the truth ? Forget the fake injuries or time wasting, City still have major problems
A simple ball over the top kills us every time ? Our defence is a shambles and all over the place. Also, I don't understand how Savinho is in this team or played the whole game, the lad is a (FAKE)

How have we become so soft and easy to beat ? Haaland should be a Monster, smashing everything in front of him, but he's turned into the cowardly lion from The Wizard of Oz.

The only good thing is that we will now see the demolition of this squad and getting rid of the dead wood
A Painful watch at a daft time, and it was daylight outside with the birds singing

I respect anybody who pays a wedge to go and follow city over there but please me tell you didn’t go there expecting us to walk it after the shite season we've had?
The Premier League and the fa cup the only competitions that get me revved up, maybe the champions league slightly but I couldn't care less about the club world cup, means absolutely nothing to me but like I said I take my hat to anyone who has gone and watched us over there, fair play to them.

I think you need to do the same. Doku created scores of chances and had two defenders on him most of the time. Savinho didn't have a bad game either, we had 30 chances in total but came up against a defence and keeper that earned their keep well on the night and got lucky on the break. We scored 3 times. You can't blame our wingers for the fact that we conceded 4

:)

That’s your decision to spend fortunes. At the end of the day the above poster is right. There glorified freindlies.

We played well in quite a few of the games, but no one is going to remember this when the season starts

I am a big Blue and want City to win everything, but the truth is, we are a million miles away from winning it
I hate saying it after the Juve result, But sorry big questions need asking and some players need to be told the truth and leave

It seems the Juve result got us all a bit giddy. Hopefully the players learn that lesson. And like you say the ones that's CBA are moved on

Their 2nd goal provided the perfect example as the striker will always be favourite in that situation, but doesn't always score.

Haaland and Augero might convert 7/8 out of 10, but Savinho/Sterling/Navas would be nearer to 2/3.

The goalkeeper needs to tighten the angle and hold his nerve, but Ederson often appears half hearted and not quite in the right position (hence the number of times he concedes penalties or gets rounded by clever strikers)
Even at Fulham on the last day he got away with some dreadful positioning for a home counter attack early in the Second Half.

Obviously he does make some saves (and none more important than Istanbul), but given the amount of times City are caught in transition, we need him to be more influential.
so its the keeper fault 2 defnders stood 2 yards inside their half of pitch while striker stood behind them on halfway line ok
it was great pass though

This setup relies on a goalkeeper who performs miracles - or at least saves a few, consistently - and defenders who are comfortable running back towards their own net.

I love Eddie but he’s not that keeper and Dias and Akanji aren’t those defenders. Dias is slow, Akanji is fast but is a lazy fucker if it involves running backwards. Khusanov is the one for it but Pep won’t play him. Baffling.

They are a decent enough side but yet another low block striking at our cryptonite filled transitional weaknesses.

One thing that has not changed is our ability to miss too many clear chances and concede to every shot on target. If that continues we might as well play with a fly goalkeeper and we certainly won't win anything as we will be punished over and over by any decent side. That Malcolm goal, makes me shudder each time ive seen it, fucking horrendous defending, inept defensive positioning on transition a schoolboy centre half would be ashamed to have conceded.

Time to rest up a while and gather our strength. Viana will dispense with those the club want out as far as is possible and the squad will come back trimmed, leaner and raring to go hopefully.

I'm still filled with the optimism the start of a new season always brings and the Etihad will be 14% larger and look the business.

Congratulations to Al Hilal they deserved their win, get the players rested and ready for next season and if I have one wish it's that we don't play Eddie in important games again, he has been immense for us but it's time.

Giant Killers. what a win for them, good luck in the rest of the tournament
