Al Hilal (N) | CWC | Post Match Thread

We had 14 shots, dominated the stats. The keeper made at lest two world class saves. Personally I think the tactics are going in the right direction. Just got to take those chances is all we need. Most of what we need is there though.
We conceded four goals. Against Al-Hilal. That isn't going in the right direction. All of them were poor goals to concede. Even when playing badly last season, we usually dominated the stats. We lost 4-0 at home to Spurs and had 30 shots to their 6. However, the failings are there for all to see and they are exactly the same failings.

Aye, I knew I was getting carried away after Juve but this was every problem we have had for 12 months. If Rodri isn't playing 90 minutes then why is Nico C not getting game time? Pep has apparently solved the problem of us scoring goals, but it means nothing if we haven't solved our defensive issues which were our main problem last year. If you score 3 and don't win games you've got big problems.

Playing slow possession football and overlapping fullbacks instead of Doku and Savinho.
We played slow possession football on many an occasion throughout the four in a row. It often won us games. There were games when we played it quicker, but in many a game, we conserved energy, we slowed it right down, used game management and strangled the life out of the opposition whilst simultaneously boring opposition fans to death. None of our supporters complained about it then, nor did they last season. What we complained about last season was seeing the exact sort of thing that cost us four goals last night. Week in, week out.

Pointless tactics from pep. I really don’t want another season of oaps. What has nush & nico got to do. They should be playing most games not Bernie & Gundy. Ridiculous

Only positive is we get a break which the players need.
Thought Bernie one of the better players yesterday. Gundy however should be sold or retired into a coaching role

Dias is so overrated it's unbelievable. Flatters to deceive with his arm waving and chest pumping. He's not a leader, and he's not a top class defender.
I thought Dias was easily our best defender. Made numerous blocks and interceptions. If he hadn't been there it could have been embarrassing. Gvardiol had his worst game in some time. And RAN went missing in defense possibly he had instructions from Pep. They had the freedom of the pitch on their right wing, our left. I'm yet to be impressed with RAN defensive work. Don't care that he's great going forward if he can't defend. Hopefully it's a simple tactical fix for the coaches.

Maybe correct, but the thinking from Pep has to change to accommodate the changes of personnel if it is to happen. There remain signs that he still favours the old guard who have served the club so well in the past.

That is the thinking which needs to be accepted before we are to move forward..............imo
This is it exactly. If we'd lost 4-3 and we'd been working through growing pains with the January additions and our new summer signings, I suspect the tenor of the forum would be a lot different.

The angst and anger is amplified (sorry about the alliteration) because damned near all of us know what is going to happen with the lineup and then the subs made last night. And it happened. And we're all worried as hell that it doesn't matter who Hugo signs, it's going to be Pep's guys that dragged us down last year doing it again this year.

We lost. It happens.

They got their second half tactics spot on, and we didn't.

This whole wailing on Pep and the players is tiresome.
It's a discussion forum.

This thread is a post-match thread to discuss what happened in the game.

If we used your methodology, then we would have no threads.

The reality is that when somebody like Al-Hilal are scoring four goals against you, and when those four goals came through exactly the same failings as last season, then there is much to discuss.

Alternatively, we can all sit there like an American crowd, draw up banners asking for Erling to give us his shirt or a kiss, and we can happily clap, pretend everything is just fine, and just say, "ah, bless them. It happens".

That isn't support. It doesn't show you care. It's just blind cheerleading.

Where i think i differ is i thought Ruben was far and away our best defender on the night. He made so many blocks and interceptions. Whereas Gvardiol had a bit of a mare.
Ruben is excellent when he doesn't have to be fast. The problem is we are asking him to run down these super quick forwards and wingers and he just doesn't have that in him. Khusanov does, but he doesn't have the passing savvy yet.

a fair point.
Ruben is hindered further when they counter and both our full backs are at the other end of the pitch for tactical reasons.

A lot of the posters currently slagging the team off and Pep are the same posters who couldn't even be arsed with this tournament and thought it was bollocks.

Well you've got your wish. The lads will be home tomorrow you fucking wankers

I'm genuinely at a point when I can't be arsed with the fucking moaning, whinging, self entitlement right across this board. Whether it be about City or in Off Topic. Maybe it's the internet in general. But I'm fed up of wasting my time reading the same old miserable as fuck posts. Maybe need a break from this toxic shithole. Because that's what it's fast become

Why is he in such a rush to fuck off on holiday he's just come back from about 3 months injured. I'd give him a 6 month holiday training with the EDS because he's been fucking abysmal every game he's played since we won the treble
He was a great bargain buy. He has served his purpose but is now very much surplus to requirements. I will be revising our points total downwards if he has to be relied upon next season.

That's where a stop clock is a better method than injury time, stops the fakers and prevents any manipulation of time to be added.
Totally agree - I cannot understand what opposition there could be to this? 2x30 minutes of in-play.
