45 | Abdukodir Khusanov - 2025/26

Remarkable how impatient some people are. He's 21 years old. He's settling in and has understandably looked shaky in this adjustment period. But no, he must start every single game otherwise it's obvious pep doesnt rate him and he'll be sold 6 months after we signed him.

The issue with Khusanov is how patient he is going to be. He still has plenty of development ahead of him but he could be similar to Cole Palmerin thinking he has made it and isn't going to stick around.

How can he get any better glued to the bench whilst Pep flogs the same names over and over. They aren’t getting any better the more minutes they play, if anything they look worse. It’s ridiculous.

Pep has loyalty to the same names because of past performances. But clearly that starts and finishes in 2023-24 because all of them have either been crap or injured since. Khusnaov and Reis are seen by Pep as pushovers and treats them like they should be happy to be here whilst seemingly been frightened of dropping any of the old guard because they might run off to the media and talk or even worse in Peps eyes, they will go to another club

Probably vastly more patient than the borderline unhinged collection of posters we have on here.

He's come from the arse end of nowhere in footballing terms, hes not had the same level of footballing education the players in academies in Europe get, I highly doubt he will have that "ive made it. Im a superstar" attitude that can infect some given that 2 years ago he was in the reserves of a Belarusian second tier side with limited expectations.

I imagine he'll be buzzing his tits off just to be here for many years even if he didnt feature at all just because of his meteoric ascent. When players sign 5 year contracts, i dont think theres many that are re-evaluating their decision 10% of the way into it because they haven't established themselves as automatic starter yet. I have no worries about his happiness here.

He was MOTM in pretty much every other game, and won player of the month with a record amount of votes. I would say that's as promising as it gets and miles better than our other CBs, maybe Gvardiol aside.
Exactly. He's a kid playing his first few games in the Premier League. He's going to make mistakes. If we never accept any mistakes from our players, how are we ever going to bring any youngsters through? Young players are inconsistent by definition. Khusanov has been largely fantastic when he's been allowed to play.

I've said it on another thread but he was so bad on the ball against Bournemouth that i think it has really spooked Pep.

While that Bournemouth game definitely showed some bad on the ball things, he is still young, and he normally isn't that ball on the ball tbh.

His positives and potential improvement are far more worth gambling on though, so I would hope Pep isn't spooked by 1 game.

Other far more experienced players have made consistently more mistakes.

They have daily training sessions, players improve most on the training pitch. I dont see anything wrong with Pep favouring tried and tested, it's natural and it's up to the new players to come in, prove themselves reliable and show they're the better option than what we've got. Khusanov must not have shown that in training yet and hasnt shown that in the games hes played either.

Whilst I can agree with these sentiments, why did we sign two young, inexperienced defenders for £65m?

I could understand if we signed them both for £30m-40m, but we blew a significant portion of money on a position that is evidently in need of upgrading and/or refreshing. Especially with the decline of Akanji, Dias and unreliability of Stones and Ake.

We would have been better spending that £65m on a ready to go experienced defender in my opinion.

This tournament, especially in the opening two games was the perfect opportunity to give them a game, yet both played only 45 mins if I recall, Reis maybe a little longer.

Tried and tested doesn't work anymore based on last season, or that Al-Hilal game.

Pep is not perfect, and understandably, is finding it hard to let go of his favourites. His bias is justified based on past glory, but we can't carry on like that.

That was two years ago now. A long time in sport.

If we can't agree their levels of performance in 24/25 are much lower than their levels of performance in 22/23, then there's no point having this discussion. Past glory shouldn't cement you a spot in the lineup in the future.
It was one year ago that we won four in a row.

Akanji is our most versatile defender and Dias has been voted in the Fifpro World XI twice.

But yes, we should get rid of them because we lost in a preseason tournament and replace them with children like Khusanov and Reis.

We seem to have a lot of players at the moment who MIGHT come good.

We could do with a few who are top notch in my opinion and we should be paying top dollar for them. We should have done that after the CL final. We didn’t and now we are scratching around trying to find the next big thing whilst floundering on the pitch.

Our signings seem a bit middle of the road on the last few years other than Haaland. Time will tell with this lad and the others but there are no guarantees.

We seem to have spent a fortune on prospects.

It’s not about being knocked of the trophy as. Most wilk be happy it’s over but it’s the reality which is now creeping in that instead of us building a new team and bedding them in we are once again gonna see the same players who by the way stunk he ground out last season once again said centre stage and before you say about last glories yes they did perform great but they where paid crazy money did doing so aswell . If you want sentiment then just watch premier league years when we won it and embrace these new kids coming in .

For me going down the young route is the right call, whoever we bring in needs time to adjust anyway and is unlikely to be ready to go regardless.

Theres been a rather large over-exaggertaion imo of our entire backline supposedly being finished. They've all suffered and played through injuries last season and they're all playing in a problematic system, put whoever you want in there, the problems remain if we setup the same way, hence why they've all looked shit together and not just 1 or 2. Khusanov was subbed off early because he was on a yellow, as has been peps blanket policy throughout otherwise he likely gets the full game.

Its not really a case of whether it works or not, it's whether the alternative is any better. I like khusanov a lot and I think he'll be a big success here but hes not shown us that hes a better option yet.

Cmon mate you can’t keep using that all the time . Been shit for past two season but we won the treble so they can carry on being shit while they are here .
One season and we reached the cup final. The season before we became the first team ever to win four in a row. Sniff fucking sniff.

Better go and buy some more defenders then cause if Pep doesn't trust Khusanov then Akanji ..poor, Stones..crocked, Nuñes ..not a defender, Dias..sloooow. I'll exempt Gvardiol and Ake both excellent. But we can't be relying on just them.

Relax, I’m not saying get rid. Even when we won 4 in a row, the level of performance was showing signs of stagnation.

Preseason tournaments are time to bed players in which we hardly saw any or besides Air Nouri and Reijnders.
