Al Hilal (N) | CWC | Post Match Thread

You are right it's a waste of time but I can't help myself.

I did ban myself from the post match threads last season as I got a bit obsessed with outing the bedwetters and the rags and dippers who descend whenever we lose but that the other night for nothing more than glorified friendlies really irked me.

I won't be going into them this season and I'm hoping there won't be many opportunities for the cryarsing entitled fans to moan as I feel the new signings, new coaches and a good rest will revive the team for next season.

Can't wait.

Some will accuse me of wishful thinking, but I think this squad is tremendously talented and will be great to watch.

The new team Pep is building will need time and will experience setbacks, followed by waves of criticisms on here, but my guess is, we'll witness spectacular performances next season, especially in the second half of the season.

Not guaranteed but there's every chance of what you say happening.

If we're going to play attacking fullbacks we need at least a double pivot in front of the CB's and definitely not play 2 wingers.

A double pivot could sit where the 'high line' is with the CB's staying further back to cover runs.

Pep's forgotten more than I'll ever know even with 55 years of match attendance but, surely it's not rocket science that his tried and trusted system isn't going to give us what we need.

This time last season - and right up to the point that we were beating them 2-0 in Paris after 55 minutes - most outsiders wouldn't have dreamt that PSG would turn into the team that beat all comers in taking the Champs League.

With a little more time to bed in, fitness and luck, that could be us next season.

My thoughts as well.

Some PSG fans were probably resigned they were going to endure another shit CL season just 5-6 months ago!

Building a team takes time. Our performance vs Juventus might be seen as an exception to the rule, or as a glimpse into the future. My feeling is, it's the latter.

Just over Wigan on their way home in their Tower Air 747 be landing in 15mins

watch live

Thanks. I watched 5 minutes and saw it land at Bay 62. I don't know much about planes, but that was huge! No wonder they don't land very often at Manchester.

I'm now thinking who sat in 1st and who was in economy!!

Watching the highlights, the defending was a horror show. We won’t return to winning trophies until we get two top quality central defenders and at least one class winger. We’ll never get anywhere with Doku and Savio playing on the same team. I’m surprised Pep hasn’t seen that.
Can I ask you something, will we get anywhere with Gundogan and Bernie playing in the same team and are you surprised Pep hasn’t seen this ?

Agree, the heat there was mind blowing having been out for a game so hard to judge anything.

I think a Walker clone and Eze from Palace plus a good keeper would make us a top side.

Then a lot of deadwood to remove...one things for sure, its never been boring watching this club!

Without seeing the match, is it fair to say we dominated it but their keeper won it for them?

It's fair to say we created much more chances than them, but they were more clinical on the night. No doubt their keeper was fantastic (11 saves, some outstanding), but it's also true we weren't sufficiently clinical.

Where's Franz Beckenbauer (or the wonderful Bobby Moore) when needed?
Ps don't answer and my response not meant to be in bad taste :-)

But just WHERE do you find a sweeper and a player who can ping a decent forward pass these days?
Mats Hummels (Roma) would be my shout.Still playing but at 36 not a viable option.

I think it is also true that he was surrounded by defenders when making those saves, where we are tending to concede far more one-on-ones because we do not play a defensive game. This is leading to stats suggesting our opponents as massively efficient. It is about balance for us - we are not going to change our principles and nor should we.

When Nunes was subbed would it have been a better option to have used Khusanov. From recollection he is very good at recovery and MAY have been able to disrupt the quick counter attacks. Just a thought.
He would have prevented their breakaway goal....might not have been on the pitch for the rest of it mind. ;)
Cant believe we are not giving him game time, think he needs a run and once confident will be fantastic.

Didn't watch the game due to it being at a stupid time, but have to be honest, I've found our style of play the last couple of seasons a bit dull.

The 4 CB's tactic Pep came across won us a treble, and made us very solid, but certainly came at the expense of a more dynamic attacking style that I had become accustomed to in the years prior.

The players we've bought certainly feel like they lend to more games like this, you look at Reijnder's defensive stats and they're basically non-existant, Cherki is a high risk high reward player who'll win us games, but also cost us goals, and Ait-Nouri will likely be better in attack than defence.

I for one am happy to accept a season of slightly more chaos if Pep is willing to go for it, where we'll have games like the 5-2 against Juve, and then games like the 3-4 against Al-Hilal.

Results are important of course, but it is an entertainment industry, and I'm more excited for this coming season than I was heading into last season. And I say that with little expectation in terms of end outcome in terms of the league, I feel Liverpool are strong favourites heading into the season and we're in transition.
