The Album Review Club - Week #191 (page 1286) - Harlequin Dream - Boy & Bear

Foggy has indicated that, due to his new relaxed schedule, he won't be out of bed to post his clues until 3PM-ish.

So any stragglers have until 2.30-ish before I do the round-up.
I have a feeling he's gonna go 80s-ish.

Tinariwen - Aman Iman

Well this was different and much welcome for the reviews, amazing write up and great post from experience from @Coatigan also.
I instantly dismissed this after the first listen and hearing foreign vocals and the odd wail in the background felt totally alien - thankfully I've now got in a habit of telling myself the only thing i can listen to on Spotify for a week is the Album nominated - so as always, repeated listens pay off, I began to enjoy the sounds, the blues jam and groove on many of the tracks and after reading up on the lyrics could feel more of a connection.
Mostly all the way through there is a constant hypnotic rhythm & groove and it was pretty chilled listen, they make it sound effortless at times. Would pick 'Matadjem Yinmixan' and last track 'Izarharh Tenere' as the tunes that stuck in my head the most. Now i need a good blast of Cigarettes & Alcohol and shake the Desert dust off. Good pick!

6/10

After some early high marks, the scores for Tinariwen's Aman Iman settled down but they still came out of the week with a very respectable average of 6.43 from 14 posters. A great nomination from @threespires and an outstanding story from @Coatigan to go with it.

What's that you say? You hear somebody snoring? That'll be @FogBlueInSanFran after he sold his alarm clock and is now even further adrift from those of us on GMT. I expect he'll be along with clues sometime soon.

Whilst foggy eases himself into the day, just to say thanks to all who listened especially those who struggled with it. In relation to the whole question of 'world music' whether there is or isn't a degree of pretentiousness the great advantage of having a bit of a foray is that by definition you will hear sounds and ways of doing things that aren't available on your own doorstep. Once upon a time that exploration could be prohibitively expensive but with modern technology it's much easier to discover something you didn't even know you were missing. As I mentioned before, the particular hypnotic vibe of this album is something I've not managed to find a facsimile of on our shores despite venturing into a few genres that are in one way or another similar.

Anyway, a triple thanks to Coatigan for pointing me in their direction, then curating peoples responses to the album much more than I did! and most of all for providing a fantastic, enviable story with great pics.
