The Labour Government

What are people thinking about Starmer's latest backing of Reeves, to remain chancellor "into the next election and for many years after"?

Is this something he's going to regret? Or is it meaningless and he'll sack her whenever it suits him?

I'm going 2nd choice

The manner in which Welfare is administered is unfair to those who are not in receipt of it but have to pay for it and see abuse at every turn, and unfair to those genuinely in need of it but see their provision under threat due to the ballooning costs brought about by that same abuse.
The system has been abused for many years but it seems to have gone off the scale post covid, surely this is where to start to look for savings.
A good example attached. Details published today in response to an MP's question.
In truth it was the Tories who allowed the Motability scheme to get out of hand but it remains unresolved and is a stain on the system.

The mobility scheme, whilst not as grand as some might think isn't the issue here. You need the full mobility allowance from PiP to get a mobility vehicle. I'm pretty sure those cases you quote above are simply being alarmist and PiP has been awarded for additional conditions

Certainly agree that they should be better paid jobs and that might attract people but even in that hypothetical situation whether it would attract people suited to the roles will be an issue too.

I've said before I think we need to properly understand what's going on with mental health in order to address the issue. An entire generation doesn't get out of bed one morning and find itself biologically less resilient or able, so we need to understand the external factors driving these changes. As importantly as addressing the issues for those adults we need to know what's happening to take preventative action in children and future generations. I suspect we won't like some of the answers but we can't keep going the way we are.
What percentage of these people do you think are just lazy and need nothing more than a kick up the arse?

This is a genuine question, btw. Maybe it's an insignificant <1%? Or maybe more than that. Related, we've seen a huge change lately from people saying they feel stressed, or a bit depressed, to "it's affecting my mental health". I don't want to trivialise clinical depression which is obviously a serious condition. But it's very different from just being pissed off, and it seems to me, many people who are just a bit stressed or pissed off are jumping on the "it's affecting my mental health" bandwagon.

I’ve already posted I didn’t enjoy seeing her in such a state, she is a human being and it wasn’t nice but let’s not kid ourselves here. If that had been a Tory crying on the front bench, the vast majority of the morally outraged on here would have been pissing their sides and lapping it up.

It’s the dishonesty that’s gets you on here.
She shouldn't have been there if she's got personal issues...bj was forever hiding and going missing when the going got tough.

The worrying thing for me is that neither her or anyone else could see she'd be a mess on the front bench.

Oh I see. We'll discount the £70bn they gave to 11m people, to save their jobs and stop them losing their homes. None of that counts, obviously
Of course it counts. No-one's criticising the furlough scheme from what I can see and fair play to them for that, although I'm sure any other government would've been duty bound to implement something similar. Oh, and it didn't come out of Johnson's pocket so it's not like he personally gave us the money!

What people are referring to are the VIP Lane contracts. Matt Hancock's former pub landlord landed a £40m PPE contract despite having no previous experience of producing medical supplies FFS. This is made worse because companies like Arco - the UK's leading safety company who would've surely been better equipped to source the necessary supplies than Hancock's mate and other companies who landed contracts - were totally snubbed.

All of those mentioned must have "passed" the examination that is claiming PIP which requires filling in a huge questionnaire and having an interview with a trained professional who has the final say. That's the only way to get higher rate PIP which is the basis of being accepted by the Motability scheme, the mobility part of the payment goes straight to Motabilty for the car lease leaving an amount for daily living part. I'm dubious about some of the reasons quoted in that list given the very exacting process of getting PIP in the first place.

No when the time comes she will resign for personal reasons.

Exactly

Oh FFS

And I didn’t call for anyone to be deported, did I. So why bring up the status quo re the NHS?

I think another FFS is in order. Your response to our social integration challenges is that billionaires don’t mix? I despair at the drivel on here some times, I really do.
Thought you'd flounced off, again, last week?
