The FOC thread.

3 biggest events of the year (and made life worth living :))

Christmas.... up before dawn eating chocolate in a room colder than the fridge I have now.

Bunty night ...huge bunty on the big back, lobbiing bangers at each other etc.

Wakes week...all the fun of the fair in Stalybridge, fancying girls, hanging around the waltzer. Up to no good as my mother would say.
I Should've added knocking on doors with a shite Guy Fawkes extorting money off people.

I had to build the fires every night after school, one was a Rayburn that heated the water and had an oven on the side.
The Sunday night bath and polishing shoes for the next day was a big thing. Always went to bed with wet hair and woke up looking like a real idiot, especially with the cow lick I have on my forehead.

I suppose it was the mid 60s only on a friday night as a treat dad used to send me and my brother to the corner shop to get some sweets, we had 6 old pence to spend each and you could either get one bar of chocolate like a Mars Bar, kit kat or a Crunchie or loads of bits and pieces like flying saucers, Bubble gum or Black Jacks etc,
Mum always wanted Bon Bons and dad usually had dark chocolate like Bournville, it took me ages to make my mind up and the old witch behind the counter used to get annoyed :-)
Later in the late 60s I remember the 50p coins comming out & my nan said she was going to leave me one in her will, 50p seemed like an absolute fortune!

21p mine and in a Robbie’s pub as well :-)
Robbie's as in "Robbin", rarely go in their pubs now, we used to run our City bus from the Sycamore in Ashton, £6.10 for a Guinness contributed to us moving to the Astley in Stalybridge where it's 2 quid cheaper.

Woke ?:-
Yeh the good old days, whooping cough, Spastics, (who in a right mind would segregate a child merely because he wore a caliper on his leg?) The awful Thalidomide. Rickets. Mumps, Measels, ..........
The good old days.
remember lots of kids with the effects of Thilidomide tiny arms guess the majority have died off now, rickets was a bit before my time, Mumps and Measles are ever present. But we never had Covid or shut the country down unless you count the miners can’t beat modern living :-)

It use to be a decent pint if well kept but who the hell designs their business plan of let’s sell our beer dearer than anywhere else locally no wonder their pubs are empty and closing in droves.

Anybody do the 'Whit walks'? I remember as a young'un in Uppermill walking behind a big church banner with my Sunday School mates and using pea shooters to bombard other Sunday Schools from Delph and Dobcross. The walk culminated in a brass band contest in the park. For all I know these walks still occur.
Just watched the utube video of Delph band competition, brought back lovely memories. Loved the Chav band at the end.

Ice on bedroom windows in winter meaning getting dressed downstairs for school in the back room....the only warm room.
With me there was a big decision on winter mornings: Jump out of bed and dress at breakneck speed or get my clothes and get dressed in bed.
Either way a cotton school shirt was always freezing.

Yep got dressed up in your best togs well the only ones you had, friends and relatives use to nip into parade pop 6d or occasionally a shilling into your pocket.

My Mam used to make our full outfits minus the new shoes.
