14 | Nico Gonzalez - 2025/26

totally understandable, why would he wait for his chance warming the bench while the team from the retirement home gets all possible opportunities before him (Bernardo, Gundogan, Kova)

That poster was looking for Pep negatives way before one bad season.

I've seen a lot of 'Pep negatives' since he was at Barcelona. The 'positives' have obviously outweighed the negatives over the years, but the negatives are still there, cropping up more often as time passes.

I've never liked the way he favours his friends and surrounds himself with yes men.

I don't lkie him. I never have. I respect his achievements, but don’t like him, nor would I trust him on a personal level.

Coaches / managers come and go. He'll move on soon with my thanks for the trophies, and we will continue to be City.

Now let's get this thread back to Nico Gonzales; a player I hope will be here long enough to get a proper chance under a less arrogant, egotistic coach than Pep.

The only explanation is that Pep simply does not rate him. We can’t forget that he sees these guys in training day in, day out. Regardless it’s embarrassing for the club. £60m deadline day transfer looking to get shipped out in the very next window? How thorough were the conversations about him before he signed? Furthermore, it wouldn’t surprise me if the same thing happened to Khusanov.

Our midfield recruitment since 2022 has been abysmal.

Just an absolutely appalling use of resources. Phillips, Kovacic, Nunes and now Nico G. The best part of £200m.

Not that surprising re Nico G, the guy had a release clause that we activated on the last day of the window which says that he clearly wasn't their number one target.

Add to that the fact the guy barely plays despite Kovacic, Gundogan and Bernardo all playing appalling in stretches and it's not hard to see why they're wanting to offload.

There's too much sentiment on here. History is history... Pep is stale and looks to me to be on a tired, downward trajectory, and I believe it's time for a change. Fresh faces have arrived but we're still seeing the old ones. We need fresh thinking, a new era.

Winning trophies isn't everything for me. I've seen 64 years of City and despite the trophies have found the football played over last 3 or 4 seasons to be largely boring. Football should be entertaining, not just a side to side possession based bore.

I'd be happy to see anyone take over just to see a bit more excitement in our play. I'd have Enrique, Klopp, Maresca... whoever you want, as long as they try to play open, attractive, attacking football, I'd be happy.

It's quite simply time for a change, and consign the legendary Pep era to history.

HAHA

Romano is likely just parroting what’s already been said. Aside from a core group of maybe 8 players, it seems City would listen to offers for anyone. Weren’t we told at the end of the season that “most of the squad” was up for sale?

Perhaps Nico will go out on loan. Or I suppose if we recoup our £60m he might leave permanently. Either way something needs to be explained about our transfer strategy. We’ve spent an absolute fortune on him and he never got a run. And we still persisted with aging tired out of form players. It’s daft and a shame.

Fair points mate, can understand your point of view.

Personally I put the boredom down to the opposition approach more than our own. When a team is willing to sit so deep in such numbers, it is difficult to be exciting. That said, I do think Pep's become a bit too obsessed with his "handball-style" football. It surprised for a while, but I think teams now employ a handball-style defence and we struggle a bit as a result.

My hope is that the ex-Liverpool coaching input will help this season and make us a little more direct. It goes against Pep's philosophy to some extent though, so I expect some good and some bad days. If we can get through the first few months pretty well, I think we'll do well.

People are going way overboard. We needed bodies in January because we needed the money (& reputation) that comes with CL football.

Pep's had the Jan signings in for 6 months now, he watches them in training everyday. He can see who isn't good enough.

People slag the oldies off but the biggest issue with them last season was having to play every week, we've since bought 2 midfielders, which means they dont need to. They were also the ones who brought CL football home in the last few weeks.

Gonzalez wouldnt be my first choice to go but I dont believe he is better than Gundogan, Bernardo, Rodri, Reijnders, Foden or Cherki (all players who can play centrally) either, so I can see why he might want to move for football. Pep's clearly rates Kovacic over him too.

All the same applies to Khusanov as well.

I personally think only Marmoush and Reis were first choice Jan targets, with the latter maybe a CFG signing.

As I said, not my first choice to go but hes a backup right now, so hes going to have to fight especially as a non-HG player with squad size issues.

I don’t understand why people aren’t believing the rumours. We bought this geezer because we had a shit midfield and he still sat on the bench in the bigger games. A terrible recruitment decision

If we'd had one or more injuries he'd have been vital. But we didn't, and if we get the majority of the fee back then it's not a big deal.

Wouldn’t say it’s way overboard at all.

We have spent £200mil on Phillips, Nunes, Gonzalez and Khushanov. Not one was even given a chance to play regularly in the position they were signed to play in. Now all 4 are surplus to requirements. 2 as quickly as 6 months after signing!

The club then comes out and says it doesn’t like the figures surrounding the Wirtz deal at £100mil. They could have bought 2 of him for that we paid for those 4!.. Granted I do think he just snubbed us, but the last thing we can do is take the high ground over spending after wasting so much money on shite.

True but we know from Pep's use of game time what his views on a player are eg Grealish
What you say are views could just as easily be training, form, confidence, fitness, tactics, formations and many other factors. None of which Pep and thee coaching team rightly provide a lot of detail on.

If Nico actually goes, there are a couple of things that need to be sorted -

1) Who the fuck is driving our recruitment - if Pep doesn’t fancy a player why the hell was he signed in the first place. This ain’t 2008 where we can sign Robinho and won’t care he works or not
2) Where is the part where the coaching actually happens - if we can’t make a 60 million midfielder work in our team and that’s the third 60 million midfielder going for shit, what are we doing as a club!
