City also aggregated Leipzig, Bayern, Madrid and Inter Milan 17-3 in the knockouts of the champions league. Real and Bayern being too of the most difficult opponents in the champions league at the time. They turned up for 2 minutes of the champions league final in 99.
The treble also included the fastest ever goal in an Fa cup final. City also dragged back a very decent Arsenal team to win the league as well when they were walking away with it in January.
Last year I discussed with a Red chum the relative merits of our Treble squad with The Red Filth's 1998-9 version.
Obviously, there is always the matter of subjectivity when comparing players/squads/achievements across different eras.. and of course, there is the small matter of tribalism that affects all of us when making such comparisons!
However, my pal did concede that we had ('probably'!) the better, stronger squad in 2022-3 compared to that lot's group of players in 1998-9.
I think the killer argument though came when we looked at actual statistics*. Of all the metrics you can measure the two squads' respective achievements against in those Treble seasons, across all competitions (matches played/won/lost, goals scored/against, points achieved etc), the fact is that they only matched us on two criteria:
* remaining undefeated throughout the CL
* playing three additional League Cup games
Regarding every other measurable metric, City 2022-3 was far superior to The Red Filth 1998-9.. absolutely NO doubt.. and as I said at the conclusion of our discussion (channelling my Inner Eric Morecambe to 'Andrew Preview'), 'You had a good team in 1999, I'll give you that sunshine.. but no way near as good as what we've just witnessed from Pep and his boys!'
(* Here are the stats for each season btw, City first number:
PL wins 28-22, PL goals scored 94-80, PL goals conceded 33-37, PL points 89-79
CL undefeated season for both teams, CL goals scored 32-29, CL goals conceded 5-16
FAC goals scored 19-12, FAC goals conceded 1-3
LC games played 3, both knocked out at same stage)
