My son was asking me what my all time England team was. I go back to the late 60’s and would go:-

Gooch
Cook
Gower
Pietersen
Root
Botham
Stokes (c)
Flintoff
Knott (w)
Underwood
Anderson

Not sure how to squeeze Bob Willis in though. Those 3 all rounders would be exciting to watch in the same team.

Presumably the side should be setup to win a Test series at home in England? Because the country they're playing in does make a difference.

Can’t argue with much there maybe Broad 12th man

Since the 70s, I'm going:-

Gooch
Boycott
Cook
Root
Pieterson
Flintoff
Botham
Knott (wkt)
Broad
Underwood
Anderson

There's probably several players from before my time who'd have to make a real all time 11. Hutton, Grace, Truman, Evans (wkt) spring to mind

Not much to argue with in that XI.

That’s some middle order, from Gower to Flintoff, and Knott could bat a bit, too.

Decent slip catchers in Botham and Root. Excellent cover fielder in Gower.

Can’t argue with it at all.

You cannot leave Boycott or Trueman out
I could quite happily leave Boycott out.

He was more interested in his average than the team.

And though I don’t really remember Trueman playing, he is one of the all-time greats, and he was the first bowler to take 300 test wickets.

Started watching in 2005 so...

Duckett (w)
Cook
Trott
Root
Pietersen
Stokes (c)
Botham
Flintoff
Swann
Broad
Anderson

2005 Simon Jones or 2019 Archer as 12th man. I wanted some genuine pace in the team but couldn't justify dropping any of the above.

I struggled to know what wicketkeeper to pick so cheated and went with Duckett. Who I love watching for how he neutralises the new ball to a degree and gets the innings going at a good tempo. Bairstow or Foakes would be my choice if I had to pick a more recognised keeper.

Trescothick
Cook
Gower
Root
Pietersen
Stokes (cj
Prior (w)
Botham
Broad
Swann
Anderson

It was a toss up between Botham and Flintoff and also Prior and Alec Stewart.

Started watching in the 80's so for me it's..

Atherton (c)
Cook
Gower
Root
Stokes
Botham
Flintoff
Russell (wk)
Swann
Broad
Anderson
Each to their own but we’ve had plenty of better openers since than Athers.Plus if it’s done on ability and actual careers Pieterson walks into it

Too many all rounders.
I'd put Robin Smith in at 3 , dropping each man thereafter, a place.
Need a genuine quick, too Willis or Harmison?
