Media discussion - 2025/26

Sly sports doing absolutely everything to pave the way for Dippers to go for another bid and are having wankfest that Newcastle are interested in Sesko. FFS the headline asking why did Newcastle turn the initial bid down? says it all.
I despise the media I really do. You can tell we've hurt them badly over teh last 10 years.

SSN NEED this transfer to go through. It will fill so many hours, it's imperative.
We look 'done', Arse have got their number 9, Chelsea will buy and sell a few, BUT this will fill their rolling Sports news channel for days.

Simon Stone strikes again, now using 'Net Book Value' to make it seem like selling Hojlund for £30M would be less of a loss.

Since when, in the history of football transfer news, has anyone EVER used current net book value??

It's not only Sly Sports, it's the whole of the Red Shirt football media.

It's utterly desperate stuff.

Not a single question about Liverpool's transfer this spending this Summer, inflating the transfer market, and ruining football. Arf!

If the Scousers get Isak one of the headlines will be, 'Liverpool smash the English the transfer record and sign Isak' That will be it.

Due to PSR it is more of a thing.
That negative difference of £13m directly affects PSR calcs.
If they sold him for £30m next year instead, it would be a positive (for United) of £8.5m on PSR. If they sold him for £30m 2 years down the line it would be £30m positive for PSR.

That’s why selling Rashford for any figure would be a positive for United regarding PSR - as he cost £0 to buy, so the value of amortised remaining is £0.

Garnacho, due to low buying cost, would also be a positive PSR.

Sancho is similar to hojlund, but worse - longer and higher contract transfer fee.

TBF it is a negative slant on the player and club (unless I've missed something).

Edit: ahh, I've re-read it and get the viewpoint now.
It’s a desperate attempt to sugar coat the appalling investment that United made in that player that would not be afforded to a single other club. Deploying the current amortisation figure completely fails to identify the pitiful lack of return on investment that the club has had on the sums that have already been written down. That’s the story, not what the current amortisation figure is. By any objective measure it’s been a shockingly bad purchase and would be described as such by any honest journalist.

Stone is a fucking disgrace.

City to win another league title

Is this a prediction from Jonathon Wilson in The Guardian or his fear?

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2025/aug/02/17-years-tough-job-taking-pep-guardiola

Nothing last forever is obviously true.

Has Wilson ever written anything positive about City? Perhaps his declining time at The Guardian, without accountability to his readers and no opportunity to comment unlike other papers, is up and now it is right for him to move on. Few would miss him.

At the Club World Cup and now, at the start of this season, Guardiola appears refreshed and energised for the time ahead and new challenges. Yet, again, there is little balance in Wilson`s piece.

This season is probably the most unpredictable in many ways for a long time though we can probably still all agree that City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool will feature in the top 4.

Got to give Stone some credit. Not often you see the words 'net' and 'Hojlund' in the same sentence.

Think there was nothing to take any particular issue with in there personally. I’d say it’s likely that Pep is in the final lap of his time with us.

They've got to make hay while the sun shines.

We're going to see a lot of this media saturation during the upcoming season.

The premier league have got themselves new champions, who happen to play in red.

The media are going to over-report on all things Liverpool FC who will be referred to as "The Champions!" at every opportunity.

Brace yourself for sycophantic and obsequious wall-to-wall coverage.

Taking of hay ! I saw this from the bbc. How does a simple spelling mistake not get picked up ?

This really doesn't feel overly negative or critical from Wilson.

We all saw what Pep looked like during the rough patch last winter. He has talked about needing a long break. I'm sure there's enough guys on here who have gone through a divorce without the trouble of it being put out in the open. He has been in management surprisingly long now (his first UCL title is 16 years ago).

It's not unusual to have these questions. We all know Pep is closer to the end than the beginning with us. He obviously gets the benefit of the doubt due to his record and I think I think having a lot of new signings in the last 8 months is going to be great for him as far as a new challenge and younger players to work with, but this is far from a hit piece.
