And this leads back to what's best for the club & individual players. The players will do what suits them best. Being on a top wage for a further 12 months in a WC year, is a massive incentive for many of them to say thanks, but no thanks. I'm staying put as per my contract.I think all the experienced players just think they can convince pep to pick them, even if the club is telling them otherwise. Reasonable stance given what happened last season. Stones has 1 year left and knows his next contract is going to be abysmal in comparison to his current one, wherever he goes. He'll probably be on pay as you play incentives with a much lower base salary. So he's gonna get another year of 200k thank you very much.
Some on BM have insisted there's only an infinitesimal chance of these players staying if not wanted. However, no matter how small, there's still a chance they could refuse to leave, & all players concerned will have signed contractual terms to point to.
I'm not so certain that our squad size & player departure situation will be as easily resolved as some are making out. Then there's Pep's preference for small squads, as opposed to Foden saying yesterday he favours a big squad, as did Bernardo a few weeks earlier at the CWC.
I'm hoping it won't, but still, this could get extremely messy.
