Right back options

We have a pretty good idea of one player we looked at and he is homegrown.

If the club aren't comfortable paying the asking price for Livramento then fair enough but if we end up spending £30m on a backup goalkeeper and god knows how much on Rodrygo then I'd have to question how we're prioritising our signings.
Don’t think there is an asking price for Livramento,he isn’t for sale not even sure Livramento wants to leave.

But that's irrelevant to the point being made. Which is that we shouldn't have waited until January to sign an attacker. Talented players were available and we didn't act.

This inaction is something Khaldoon referred to as a mistake in his end of season interview.
Again, you are assuming there was a guy to get. Maybe they were monitoring Marmoush last summer, but felt they needed to see more from him before they were confident he was the right guy.

This is all very reminiscent of the "we don't need to replace Alvarez" chat a year ago.

There is a very obvious weakness in the squad that, for whatever reason, some of you are in denial about.

We'll regret it if we don't address it while we can.
If you think 'not replacing Alvarez ' was the cause of our demis last season.... Here are a few more likely options
1. Rodri's injury
2. Gundo, Beeny and Kev aging
3. Phil's personal and health issues.
4. The injuries to our Center backs
5. Bobb's injury
6. Kyle's regression and absconding.

I think the above 6 were far more relevant to our demise than Alvarez leaving. And other than Phil's absence/issues, i don't think he'd have alleviated any of the other problems.

Ehhhh.... Perhaps he'd have been a better Right back than Kyle and early Nunes. So maybe you have a point :)

Let's not be silly. You and I both know it's a combination of multiple things.

But if you think failing to replace Alvarez wasn't an important factor then I'd like to know why you think we replaced him at the next possible opportunity.

And then I'd also be interested to see you try and explain why his replacement wasn't a huge factor in us regaining form and finishing third.

I think we'd have still struggled even if we had Marmoush from day one.

After all the issues with Rodri, Phil, Kova and the Center backs, nothing Marmoush did would have saved us from conceding 3 goals in 21 minutes 2ice.

Or looking disheveled for long periods. We just had to work through that period.

Would we have been slightly better with Marmoush or Alvarez? Absolutely. But a back up striker/ Attackish forward wasn't a key issue. A porous aging injury ridden midfield and crickey defense were the biggest issues.

There were multiple issues last season but we really missed the ability to close the opposition down high up and quickly. Too many out or aging and we almost seem to have been instructed to stop attempting it to conserve energy. Alvarez was excellent at this and a real miss. Not sure we have fixed this completely but Marmoush has helped. Do think Alvarez was class and a big miss.

I think he is s class player too. But i always thought he was a bad fit. A good striker but not as good as Erling up top. An average wide forward and an atrocious attacking mid. Hus best role was as a 2nd striker in a front 2. A system we didn't play.

Alvarez absence was bigger than you think. While I agree there was a multitude of factors that contributed to our demise last season mainly an aged squad that simply wasn’t good enough anymore.

Alvarez brought in 30 g/a alone
Was pretty much our only pressing weapon
Super useful as he had legs in midfield too
He had the best connection with Foden, they constantly created goals for each other. Foden doesn’t have any chemistry with anyone like that in the squad. Which also didn’t help his bad form.
Alvarez never got injured too.

Also Pep’s decision making was easily one of the biggest reasons we had the season we did.

I don't buy that. It's the same excuse that gets trotted out whenever we choose to overlook a problem position, whether that's a Rodri backup, an Alvarez replacement or, in this case, a decent right back.

Funnily enough, there was no quality forward on the market when we chose to not sign one last summer. Fast forward six months when we're in shit form and all of a sudden we find one and splash the cash. Omar Marmoush didn't materialise out of thin air after Christmas. We simply got complacent and thought we could make do without. It was poor squad planning.

There are plenty of right backs better than what we have and a good portion of them would be moving to a bigger club, offering bigger wages, with a bigger opportunity to win trophies.
Exaxtly, we are well known for it. Terrible squad planning in not immediately replacing Kompany. And Sergio. And signing a new Fernandinho.

We waited a whole year and passed on multiple players before we signed Dias, Haaland, and Rodri. Shit squad planning, that, reacting to complacency with no long term thinking at all.

It's 2025 mate. The most recent one of those was three years ago.

Then perhaps comment on our current long term approach in 2028.

That's not even being flippant btw mate. We may well be having this discussion in 3 years and I may well say 'we waited a year to replace walker, and look how well it has turned out'.

That's the thing about an approach. You can't isolate specific moments in time.
