Wolves (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Nice to see all the doom mongers and the "I’m not happy with that side" brigade proven comprehensively wrong by both Pep and the players.
I’ll never understand how someone can be unhappy with a team that Pep picks, before a game kicks off.

It’s like they think that football managers just get the team sheet out and tick off eleven names like they’re picking Lottery numbers.

Surely it’s not difficult to understand that football managers (especially Pep) watch videos of opposition tactics, work on things in training to see what and who would work best against those opposition tactics and then pick the players they think will enact that best in the match… as well as understanding that there’s a balance of rotation across the season that needs to be taken into consideration?

It’s far more detailed and nuanced than ‘just pick all the best players’ or ‘just pick all the new players, that’s what we’ve signed them for’. Sometimes, even a player in-form is not the right player to pick for a certain game and that there is a skill set of a certain individual in the squad, who isn’t always one of the best players, who will come in and do well against a certain style of tactics from the opposition.

Fair enough, after a game, we can see that some of our tactics or some individuals who were picked didn’t work out. But not before a game because people haven’t seen the tactics Pep’s worked on at that point.

Reindeer looks some player. I hope he's not Rudolph though, as I hate red, but he can still lead us as we slay the opposition.

his awareness of where big Earl was for the third- all outstanding.
It was funny that a couple of minutes earlier, Reijnders had a chance to put a through ball to Erling for an attack but decided to pass it back, and Erling was furious, hands in the air, berating Tijjani for not passing to him.

I said in the next attack, Reijnders will make sure he finds Haaland with a pass, and wow, he did deliver for City's third goal.

There was a story about Jack Charlton asking Sir Alf: “Why do you select me when there are better centre halfs around?”
Alf replied: “Jack, I don’t just pick the best players, I pick the best team.”
In that England team Bobby Moore, a ball playing half back, needed a big bruiser next to him. Alf picked the combination.

Great way to start the season. Reijnders looks a bargain and Haaland looked back to his imperious best.

Brilliant performances throughout the team and I'm very happy the likes of Akanji and Gundogan stayed on the bench.

If we can bring in Donnarumma, a right back and a goal scoring winger we could be in for an excellent season.

Did Pep mention anything about the ref and how poor he was? Worried that was just the start of what will come

Poor referring decisions happen to every team. Bournemouth could have had a player sent off for handball against Liverpool, whilst a week prior Liverpool got bailed out by VAR/referee ignoring their blatant handball against Palace.

Didn’t realise at the game but just watched it back, that third goal 52 seconds and 19 passes uninterrupted, beautiful football

Some lovely parts to it as well, Trafford lofting it up to the middle of the pitch. Reindjers cut back to find Haaland and the finish was a cracker. They went front to back very quickly yesterday which was good to see.

Some really nice, incisive football yesterday. Some clinical finishing on view.

Our new guys look great buys and Reijnders looks set for superstardom. What a classy player. Elements of Lampard, Gundo and Yaya there but he’s his own man.

My only concern about the season is whether we’ll still be vulnerable to quick counter-attacks. Midfield and going forward, though, we have strengthened considerably, so let’s just outscore the oppo every week, please!

And Bobb! Bobb was really most impressive. Beautiful skills and a lovely weighted pass to Rejinders.

I would caution that it was Wolves. Wolves might go down. And at 0-0 and 0-1 there were some moments when they looked dangerous. The game went well and the performances of key players was very good.

Hugely positive to get Stones back. I have been saying all Summer that this season depends on Stones and Rodri because I knew we were going to be good going forward, the question is can we defend.
They had plan and nearly worked . Chip over fullbacks Cross early into box offside and lack of anticipation actually stopped them taking lead .

Lovely assist by Rico.

Does anyone know where I can buy one of these please? I've searched City shirt on here. The city website has shirts for 146 pounds...no thanks. Don't want to end up with a dud.

It might sound strange to say (and I've not read the whole thread), but the main thing I took away from yesterday was... Joy.

The team looked HAPPY! The players were TOGETHER in a way I've not seen in a long, long time! I'm not talking about the dogged togetherness of the 4peat and stuff, but the joy of football, in itself.

It's only one game, sure, but the whole vibe of the team has lifted and that's what we've been lacking, in my opinion.

Reijnders is a happy soul. He never seems to stop smiling and that may be infectious. Bobb looked very happy yesterday as well. Don't get too excited though Khus has a permanent scowl that would curdle milk at 100 yards bless him.

I do agree with you though. They looked together and enjoying life. - great to see. I think I enjoyed the game yesterday more than anything I watched last season.

Celebrate the win, celebrate the performance, there is no need to celebrate certain players not being picked. It is a good start and so much change in the playing staff and coaching staff will take time to fully bear-fruit, so staying close in these early stages is vital.
