A Serious Reality Check...
I watched back last week's match against Wolves twice, because I didn't see the performance live that many City fans & pundits would have us believe, & so today proved.
Before we start to lose our collective minds, it's only our second game of the new transitional season. Strangely, I'm not too concerned by our tepid performance, as I think this painful defeat could be the best thing that could happen to us. It'll bring us back down to earth & give us a sense of realism & perspective.
The Turning Point...
The key moment in the match was the injury to Ait Nouri & him subsequently having to go off. We lost his threat going forward which gave Porro the confidence to venture further forward than he had done up to that point. This is when the tide began to turn. Spuds grew in attacking confidence, & we visibly shrank & looked unsure of ourselves.
Reijnders & Cherki looked lost. Gonzalez was trying to cover our lack of central midfield structure on his own, which was impossible against such a strong, effervescent Spuds midfield three. We got bullied & had no strength to fight back.
Oscar Bobb was almost anonymous, & every time he received the ball, Spuds doubled/trebled up on him forcing him to either play the ball back, or he lost possession.
Moose had a rampaging start to the game, but quickly lost his effectiveness after the injury to RAN. Haaland put himself about, but we were seriously profilgate with the limited chances which came our way in a match against a top opponent.
If Reijnders & Cherki weren't aware of what the Premier League was all about, they are now. Reijnders was given the freedom of Molineux against Wolves, but today he was strangled & had no answers.
Cherki seemed shocked by the pace, power & lack of space he was afforded in his first serious test in the PL. As soon as he received the ball, Spuds showed him zero respect & jumped on him & he kept looking over to Pep as if to say "WTF is this? What should I do?", but he'll learn.
I'd rather get a collective poor performance like this, & the reality check it brought about, out of the way as early possible, so we have time to address the issues our disjointed display exposed.
Congrats to Spuds. I fuckin hate the bastards, but they played their game, remained solid & took their chances. It was City who looked flaky & as solid as wet bog paper in our first home game.
