82 | Rico Lewis - 2025/26

Has no work ethic, jogging back and leaving us exposed every single time. I knew he wouldn't catch Johnson and that it would end in a goal before they even crossed the ball. Players go past him like he is not even there. The academy fetish needs to end, he wouldn't start for any PL team. Can't wait for the usual posters to praise him after we crush Burnley at home. I would look good in a game like that as well. It matters how you look when the opposition is solid. Pep's blind spot.

Doesn't have to start every week does he. Just play him further forward when he's needed.
See ive talked about this earlier...

Why would we play him in midfield cause he can. do a job there...we have midfielders for that who are ALL considerably better than he is.

He isnt good enough in his own position.

This is just people making excuses for him

At the expense of who? He’s not strong enough and doesn’t impact the game. The reality is he’s just not good enough to be playing for us.
Rodri Reinjders Foden
González Lewis Bernardo
Alarming drop off in second string midfield

Didn't put O'Reilly in as we've not seen him play there, yet.

He’s never needed, that’s the problem. There’s not a single senior midfielder at the club that he’s better than, and by trade he’s a midfielder, so how the fuck he actually manages to start games and playing at RB I’ll never know.

It’s a mess and Peps blind spot for him is seriously hurting us.

Nothing against the lad but I feel he is targeted every game by the opposition.

Also what he lacks in physicality you'd hope he'd make it up in pace/sweeper role but not the case either as first goal proved today.

I don't know what Pep sees in him.
You’re right they defo were targeting him with crosses to the back stick. He actually did OK and I don’t think he was to blame for the 1st goal, we’ve played the offside trap and it wasn’t him that played richarlison on, it was hard for him to get back in after that. Not saying he should be our right back but just an observation.

Because sometimes players need to be rested.
He isnt good enough there.

If players need to be rested then thats why people have been sayingwe need more depth in the number 6 area of the pitch....we dont play an inferior defender there just cause he can do it - we play a player who is a midfielder....Id rather play Nico OReilly in midfield if any of our midfielders need resting...he is a midfielder after all

why?

He isnt good enough there either

Who drops out for him in midfield?
You have to be on the wind-up!

Doesn't have to start every game. Doesn't have to start often. But he's a decent midfield option who's getting there.

He's not a six, he's better further forward.

He was partly to blame for the first goal - yes the offside didnt work, Stones at fault and then slipped....the high line ultimately is suicidal

However

His recovery run was slow (a recurrent theme with him)
He went for the cross with the wrong foot (he also did that last year on a number of occasions) which meant he missed the ball....

So yes he was partly at fault for the first goal amongst others.

He also let them down his side of the pitch a number of other times....a top class team would have scored more today

No he’s not. If an option is substandard and not good enough, well then it shouldn’t be an option.

And no, he’s not getting anywhere except in the way of possible success.

Anyone hanging today's result on Rico Lewis is simply reinforcing beliefs they entered the game with, and will still hold regardless of how well he performs. He is not to blame for today's result. We did not take several chances, a central defender slipped at a crucial time, and the keeper gave the ball straight to their team in a dangerous area. None of that is on Rico, and I cannot think of other clear chances that Spurs had.

Fans will need to be patient this year because we are a young team coming together with several with no experience of the PL. I think we will be in the mix, but we will be inconsistent, at times.

He's not a six, he's better further forward.
So who is he better than further forward in our whole squad of players with the technical ability to play there?

Bobb?
Foden?
Cherki?
Reijnders?
Nico OReilly?
Marmoush?
Doku?
Rodri
Nico

The answer is none of them. All of those players can play further forward in midfield and he is not even the same class as ANY of them in that position People trying to shoehorn him into the starting line up is absolute proof that he isnt good enough in either position.
Yes players in the past have made transitions to different positions so it can be done clearly - Rico Lewis ultimately is not good enough to do so...we have several seasons of evidence to show for this now along wih the fact that he was DROPPED for a player who isnt even a specialist fullback but ALSO isnt good enough to get into our midfield!
