It might have, if they offered what was asked. Given they are spending £51m on Simons, that was probably their ceiling and they were never really going to get close to the £65m + we would have reportedly considered.

Think they offered more than that. Someone at the club was never going to sell!

It has never been claimed that they offered any more than the initial £50m which got instantly laughed off. I know people want to believe they did, but I checked back, and couldn't find any such claim. 'Prepared to' was the closest it came, and even then it was a good 10m under what our club was said to have set.
 
Well,that we will never know for sure but by all accounts they were willing to bid more but theres not much point unless we have got our replacement.

'Willing'. Sure they were. If they had bid what it took, and he was prepared to go, we would have found a replacement. Or sold him anyway with a replacement to come later.

As you say we will never know, but that's the reading of it I am sticking to.
