I never played at any sort of level other than for fun but I was taught to pass the ball in front of a teammate. We've got some of the best players in the world but there's been a number of passes, even in the first 10 minutes, from us where it's gone slightly behind the receiving player or straight to their feet, forcing them to stop to take it.
