Brighton & Hove Albion (A) | Post Match Thread

The fact that we were coasting as you put it is a huge red flag - how many times in previous seasons baring last season have you seen the side socre the first goal and then be ruthless and try to score 2. 3 4 etc. The side even before the first goal went in was flattering to deceive and the evidence in some players play was there for all to see (RAN benig chief culprit - he was so sloppy and careless - thats as bad as ive seen from any player in the last 10 years...he really looked like he couldnt give a shit). Marmoush isnt much better unless he is within 18 yds of the goal...Reinjders the same

Point taken.

And maybe I'm used to seeing us just coast, and play for control of a game and the ball, rather than just going for it now.

That Still image was something you see on grass pitches on Sunday.

Never mind the PL.

That picture painted a thousand words as to what is wrong at the club.

How is that amateurish defending allowed to happen?

Where is the structure? Especially at 1.1 when Brighton had their tails up.

That surely isn't down to players switching off cos we see that same image week in week out.

You don't defend like that ? 7 City players behind the ball when Brighton are attacking ???

Total control for 60 minutes, should have been 3-0 up at haltime.

Total lack of control for 30 minutes, could have been far worse but for James Trafford.
Like so many games last season, never seen a club like ours with players allergic to scoring. Any new signings, we should make them take 10 shots on goal and see if they can actually get one on target. But seriously as bad as we are defending, we are shocking going forward with zero creativity. Remember when we used to have 20 + shots a game, now its no where near that

Today was just our fourth game of pre-season. It’s the equivalent of the Chelsea pre-season game last year in Ohio the week before the Community Shield.

Only thing is, it’s the third game of the PL season!

Maybe we should have organised a couple of friendlies in the last two midweeks to get more match fitness in these lads’ legs? because look massively undercooked! We’ve struggled to do anything in the second half of both the last two games because fitness is nowhere fucking near ready for a PL season.

As well as that, we also need to be much more patient and realistic with this team we’ve got now. It’s a squad that’s been assembled quickly in large numbers between January and this Summer. I’ve never seen a football team do well after signing so many players in such a short space of time, ever before. So, why are people expecting it to happen with us now?

It’s a young, inexperienced team with a huge drop in quality from what we were used to seeing from 2017-2024. Elite players have taken time to settle under Pep’s tactics, never mind young lads who’ve never challenged for titles before.

We have to look at us now as a team that’s building for the 2027-28 season, much like in 2009 we were building for the 2011-12 season. That’s where we are. We are in a complete rebuild. With Ederson Stones Aké Akanji Kovačić Gündoğan and BSilva all likely not going to be here by next Summer, it will leave us with no more than half a dozen players in the entire squad who’ve won anything with us. This time next year will be much the same as now because more young, inexperienced players like Reis Bah Nypan and Ecehverri (plus maybe a few more signings) come back to replace those I’ve just mentioned who’s time is nearly up, to keep this full rebuild going.

In the meantime we need to stop with the unrealistic demands that this team need to be playing well together already, playing at a standard most of them have never played at before in their careers as soon as they pull on our shirt, or any notions of madness some might have that these lads should be playing at the standard of prime DSilva and De Bruyne and winning the PL+CL.

It’s like we have comic book expectations of them with no consideration or understanding of the inexperience and newness of this squad.

Time to show what we’re worth as a set of fans and get behind this team like we did the 2009-10 and 2010-11 teams where we had a much more grounded expectations of the team from that era. I think of those as ‘the Poznań years’, they were fun and exciting. We should be enjoying all this, not fucking seeing our arses because we’re not going to get 90 points in the PL or have a trip to Budapest in the CL. These young lads need us to get behind them, and we aren’t doing that.
More excuses!

But we saw exactly the same last season. People need to stop making excuses. We're now well past our peak and having Cherki fit, or buying a right back aren't going to solve that.

Haaland does not give 100% and you can see it when he's walking around doing nothing
If you think Haaland is the problem you should probably give up watching football.

Here are the problems:

1 No right back in the squad that is good enough in any fashion.
2 Centre half - Dias is horrible to say the least, others are constantly injured or will be
3. RAN, Reijnders, Marmosh - the complacency is shocking especially from RAN
4. No wide players - our wide players today are both no.10s
5 Midfield balance- Even as good as Rodri is that midfield is horribly exposed......taking Bernardo SIlva off exposed it even more...besides Rodri no one other than berarndo has ANY defensive awareness. No creativity in there either.
6 we now have a goal keeper who makes our defenders nervous when he has the ball - he is a great shot stopper dont get it twisted BUT the whole back line is constantly under more pressure because teams. are now pressing us higher up the pitch (everyone will do this) as they know mistakes happen....keeper or defender kicks it long and we are not set up to do this so the possession is then lost.

May get pelters for this but here we go

Klopp knew when it was time to walk away with his teeth still shining like a Colgate promotion

Pep needs to have a long hard look in the mirror as even Brian may would struggle to get a tune out of what we've got at the minute

Agree, said this before, just switched off after the treble.

Add to that the decent ones we let go.
Well, what do you do when you've climbed Mount Everest ? Climb it again with a piano on yer back?
We've got new players but we need will power, confidence, a new way of doing things ? Maybe one or two more outfield players.

PSG couldn't win titles for many years even with countless changes in managers but then one day somebody appeared in a similar nature and mould to Pep. It changed everything .
Sometimes the way we play doesn't need total change but it does need a lot of tweaking. I Don know if Pep can find that. Maybe he can but its got to happen quickly otherwise we will be down well below mid table.

What is young about this team? That is a blatant lie people spout around, as if we played with teenagers. This team is not young. 7 of the players that started were 25 or above that. We played with 3 new players whilst the rest have played for this club for over 8 months now.

I can only see Haaland getting double figures goals this season when previously that was expected from both wingers and others on top of a scoring striker.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could handle being poor.

Reckon it's time the club and Pep had serious conversations. We're going nowhere and from what we've already seen top 4 looks well beyond what we're able to achieve

The rest of the league has caught up. Managers have figured us out a year ago. Our build up play is like watching paint dry and it's no longer enjoyable to even watch us play, win, lose or draw

The life has been sucked out of the game at this club. Slow, sterile and boring. We have some amazingly fast explosive players but they are made to play in a system that completely strips away their talent. Which is fair enough when the system is working but it certainly ain't anymore.

We aim to be going far in Europe every season and emulating the likes of Madrid but playing the way we do week in, week out and now season after season means we're more Atletico than Real.

I love Pep, he's given me some of the greatest times of my life, but nobody is beyond criticism or has an unlimited shelf life. We need a different direction.

Good post.

We used to have control but it was with purpose - always looking for the second, third, forth goal....day we had control but we NEVER looked like we were going to do anything with it.
