Marc Guehi | Staying at Palace

We also have bought top-class talents for significantly less. Hanging hats on Grealish and Philips is to not look at the whole picture.
Not from the Premier League we haven’t, not since Delph.

If they’re a) English b) have significant PL experience c) in a position we need to strengthen then we should be all over them.

After Chelsea got done for tapping up Olise but established there was a release clause, we should have been all over him. Instead, we spent more on Doku, who was considered both injury-prone and goal shy.

But invest in that summer, and it could have been 5 and 6 in a row, Never take your eye of the ball

Surely, we could have done better, but nobody knew in advance. For instance, had we decided that Treble team was worn out and we had to buy star players in 2023, then that might have costed us the 4 in a row due to a premature rebuild.

Let's hope much of the rebuild in terms of signings is behind us. Now it's on Pep to make the whole greater than the parts.

I think the wheels started to come off in the 4-in-a-row season and everybody said we need to invest in that summer
You need to invest in new players when everything is still rosy and then it gives them time to settle or you end up with what we have right now,
Liverpool are signing players for the future and not just for this season

You have to say that's a great deal for Liverpool. Crazy price pity we couldn't have snapped him up.

We're simply not attracting top players.

The 115 charges probably put many off, but when players are almost begging clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal, and even the rags to come and sign them, you've got to wonder what we've got to do to attract elite players.

We're shopping at Lidl nowadays.

That's a good point and hindsight is a wonderful thing. But I thought at the time we were wrong to give a 33-year-old Walker a three-year deal after the Treble. And whilst I can forgive us for not dismantling things after the Treble, we still bought poorly. Furthermore, I think deep down we all knew 23/24 showed the opening of some cracks. We won the league largely due to being carried by Rodri and Foden, with important contributions from Haaland and Alvarez. Nobody else excelled that season. The serious rebuild probably should have happened in summer 2023, but DEFINITELY should have happened by summer 2024.

But how lucky was Pep with Rodri for 4 seasons? We were a walking time bomb without anybody at the club who can play in his role
Well, we didn’t stand still there did we? We thought we had it covered with Englands Player of the year. It turned out he wasn’t good enough and was totally unsuited to us. That set us back a long way, £45m outlay and a 6 yr deal for him. And looks it like our recruitment team have repeated the mistake with Gonzalez. So the bottom line is we haven’t stood still at all; it’s our recruitment team have made bad decisions.

I'm not sure how this equates with us having the world's best manager...

Still not really sure when Marc Guehi turned into the reincarnation of Bobby Moore in the eyes of many on here. Solid enough defender but not even Palace’s best centre back
Yes wanted by Liverpool puts you on another level and the players all become world class. But him replacing Van Dick next season or the season after that makes there defence weaker in my book.

And moving from a club with lower expectations where he plays on the left side of a deep back five, to a club with stratospheric expectations where he will play on the right side of a high back four.

Gonzalez has looked decent to me whenever he's played. Put him with Rodri and Reijnders and we'd have a quality central 3.

I don’t understand why that would be. With all we’ve won, what is it we’re getting wrong in making the club an attractive prospect to the best players?

Yeah, we’ve spent enough just on very average players. Not sure who actually picks the players these days but they need replacing whoever has the final say
