Hugo Viana | Director of Football

Transfer window has been a microcosm of our last two games
We started superbly, then failed to take opportunities and make it count, and ended up with everyone depressed
Yep, we'll go to Arsenal and Liverpool with Nunes/Lewis as our Right backs, genius.

From a fan's point of view, there's nothing wrong with a mediocre season. We've had dozens of them and we keep coming back every week for more.

From the CFG point of view, finishing outside CL qualification places would probably be a financial disaster.

The main issue is 'are the club moving in the right direction?'

The last year or two suggests that we may not be. It's a complacent mess that Viana has walked straight into.
From a proper blue’s point of view finishing even mid table in the league is a helluva lot better than most seasons back in the day so yes you’re right those fans will keep coming back. But what percentage of the crowd is made up of real fans these days ? The half and half clowns, Erling fanboys, tourists etc won’t be turning up every week unless we’re at or near the top.

I have no idea if Viana’s track record suggested he’d be a suitable replacement for Txiki but his first window leaves him looking out of his depth

I think we've got a hard core of about 35k to 40k fans, with another 5/10k who will cone back if and when the prices are 'right'. It's hard to guess... we've had a procession of various fanboys and tourists over the past 15 years or so!

Give Viana time. He'll prove his value when Pep leaves.

Khaldoon did say in his interview that we will do everything possible to be back to the standards we had not even so log ago and how hungry the players were to come back to pre season.

and then have a summer window where Arsenal and Liverpool both adds more quality and spend much more than us.

did we get closer to our recent high standards or further away with this summer? hard to say in the light of the rivals actions. we could improve 10 points on last season but rivals too.

Arsenal didt give a shit of getting sales done, while Liverpool didnt struggle with selling for good fees. Diaz, Quansah, Nunez all got in good fees and others too. they got more for Kelleher than us for Ederson.
highest fee we got was McAtee at around 25m, and Ederson at 12m and struggled a lot to find clubs for Akanji, Grealish where we pay portions of their salary instead of sales.

It’s fucking mad. Some of the decisions Txiki made are borderline pure negligence.
Agree, Phillips is a really bad one, even my Leeds mates talked about his injury record at the time we signed him.

Hard to judge Vana until the next window as he's had a lot of shit to deal with not of his own making. Loads were raving about his signings after the Wolves game.

When all the deals are announced and we reflect I think the atmosphere will calm down on here.

Ultimately we trod water for too long and have them had a big job transitioning the squad.

We have shifted a number of high earners out of the squad and selected ones we want to secure long term. We have freed up more cash as a result and clearly the hierarchy aren't in a panic to see instant success over long term stability.

Hard to accept as a fan, and time will tell if they get it right. But the fact is, we have the resources to go big again in the next windows and there will be plenty more top talents out there who we can prize and hopefully they come into a much more stable side.

We aren't in a Newcastle or Villa situation where we have to sell so the future remains bright. This season might be a tough one but if expectations are as low as they appear the only way is up!

I'm giving Viana about a 6/10 for this window. Brought in some potentially very good players and brought the average age down considering. However, we still don't have a good enough right back or an effective cover for Rodri. The same 2 positions for the last 2-3 seasons!

I agree but failure to qualify for the CL may affect us badly and at the moment I think that's going to be a struggle.

That signing was a lot to do with Pep’s mate Bielsa bigging him up, remember at the time Pep saying as much, stool sitting **** was taking the piss all along
