Rock Evolution – The History of Rock & Roll - 1984 - (page 198)

Go on then...how long have you/ we bloated it to?
Only 100 songs and 6.5 hours but 15 (most) of the extra tracks I added are at the very end so people can stop at Rapper's Delight if they wish.

I need to have a run through the whole thing again from start to finish (I've listened to most bits) but I reckon it is a good, varied list, that captures plenty of the big songs from the year and a few lesser known gems.

OK. the 1979 playlist is complete.

I added four more songs to the coda to bring it up to a round 100 tracks.

I had already added a couple of Zep tracks to the coda: 1979 was the only time I saw Zep live. There is another album that I strongly associate with that day at Knebworth. Like an idiot, I decided to join the queue for entry to the gig late on in the evening (see what I did) before the show, rather than trying to get some sleep in my little (borrowed) tent. I was not alone. A lot of folks did the same thing and eventually, the weight of the crowd broke open the gates to the "arena", precipitating a mad dash through the night to get a good spot. Mad being the operative word, because one ended up sat on dew soaked grass, body all sweaty from the run, which meant it was bloody cold despite being midsummer.

Anyway, at some point in the morning they played Pink Floyd's latest album over the P.A., the first time I had heard the whole thing. So in honour of the fact that City have just signed The Wall, I have added a couple more tracks from "The Wall" : the surprise bit hit single "Another Brick in the Wall Pt.2" and my favourite Floyd track "Run Like Hell".

I have also slipped in a single that I bought in late 1979 Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and The Charlie Daniels Band's only UK hit "The Devil Went Down to Georgia".
Where is it?

I was thinking earlier on (Yes I can think). My antidote to a bad City performance has always been music.
Your favourite bands never lose at home or away. Your favourite albums are always current and top the league.
Anyone else feel this way?
Yes, I’ve definitely had that feeling when we get spanked. The way things are going, I might be listening to even more music this year.

Very disappointed that over 12 hours have lapsed since I posted this and did not get the precise response I was looking for…..
Tell me why?

I was the first to at least give it a thumbs up on the exact day (after a dreadful loss) while on holiday in the UK, so at least you got that from me. Not sure what else I was going to be able to add other than the question above. I really liked that song in the early 80's when I would hear it each and every Monday played on WMMR out of Philadelphia. Good and appropriate selection.

BTW, if you are ever looking for a restaurant selection, always listen to @BimboBob.

Even my vegetarian daughter got the "best ever" Mediterranean Tart at the Mason Arms, so it seemed only appropriate to cue up "The Colour of Spring" on the way to our next destination to visit extended family. "Dad's friend/mate 'Bob'" even got full credit, much to my family's amusement that football and music connections can and do pay off.

I'm still on the lookout for a proper Sunday dinner restaurant or pub in Manchester near Piccadilly if anyone has one. PMs or otherwise fine. ;-)

Not when Buggles joined Yes. That was defo a 3-0 loss by Middlesbrough.

I did later learn to enjoy some of the music from that period though.

I’m not from Manchester but I have occasionally done Malmaison which is a stones throw from Piccadilly. It has always been nice.

Ha ha too right Sadders.
Losing Jon and Rick and signing the Buggles would have been like losing prime Vinny and Sergio to sign JFE and Danny “Fecking” Ings.

I did see that version of Yes live at the Apollo. One of those gigs where the doorman let us in without tickets.

Perfect, thank you for that.

We'll be in Edinburgh on Friday visiting the castle as it opens with an appointment, unlike when we visited the city last in 2022. We decided to visit Stirling instead of Glasgow after that as a new town not yet visited that day afterwards too. It's been a fun three days of castles thus far with very nice weather and plans around things when it is not.

I appreciate the suggestion and will have our 1979 playlist to catch up with on the train both that day and back over to Manchester on Sunday.

I will say this, and I promise to not get ahead of things 1980, I'll take Drama, the first proper album I heard by the band prior to discovering their back catalog, over most things from Tormato.

While Trevor Horn got all kinds of grief trying to perform songs from the back catalog live, I'll credit him and Geoff Downs for that album and the uniqueness of songs from a band that had a freshness from the tired version of material that the band put out just prior. There's a reason nothing was nominated from 1978. That won't happen with 1980, I can promise you that.

That version of Yes helped bridge the version of what was still to come, and while most of it never equaled what came prior, most was enjoyable to a legion of their fans, including one who discovered the band during this period at the entry of teenage years. We can fly from here.

I’ll be driving back to Edinburgh from Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest on Friday. Will be playing more of the 1979 playlist on the way up. Hope you enjoy your visit to Auld Reekie.
