President Trump

You'd have enjoyed Nuremburg, 1938. How does it go, "China uber alles"? Sorry, that's a bit obvious. Instead, if you've not seen it, have a look at "Cabaret" (the movie) with Liza MInnelli and watch the scene about half way through when they're having drinks in the Bavarian beer-garden and the handsome young man stands up to sing "Tomorrow Belongs To Me."
It's a rousing tune in a great film - and a warning of what was to come. You might like it.
My TikTok-ruined brain can't handle any movie over 10 minutes right now, but thanks for the recommendation anyway.

Thought you would know it, bit surprised you don't. It's a long film but a very good one. Singing, dancing, some super songs. And LIZA.
But apart from the entertainment it has a dark side, Germany when the Nazis were on the rise. The song "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" captures their appeal to people eager for someone to MAKE GERMANY GREAT AGAIN better than anything I've seen; look for the old guy sadly shaking his head as they all join in - you know he will be in a concentration camp in a few years. The clip is on youtube if the whole film is too long.

P.S. I think you're smart enough to see that saying "you might like it" was meant as a reply and rebuke to your response to the parade you just watched. Dangerous stuff, this adulation of leaders/ideas/nations.

(To be fair, I can lap it up too from my own English-American liberal feelings: look on You Tube (it's short) for "Bruce Springsteen & Pete Seeger singing This Land Is Your Land" at the Lincoln Memorial after Obama was inaugurated in 2009. The intense feeling of hope from that time and place still moves liberal democrats like me. But there's not much left of it now, the world has changed.)

That depends on how you define danger. 100 years ago, China was fragmented, plagued by warlords, disunited in spirit, and militarily weak. Faced with the invasion from Japan, we were brought to the brink of extinction. Was that dangerous?

Today, the United States spends nearly $900 billion annually on military expenses. It has formed various military alliances like AUKUS, the Quad, and others. NATO's statements regard China, located far in east asia, as a threat or challenge. U.S. warships conduct "freedom of navigation" operations in the Taiwan Strait right at China's doorstep. U.S. reconnaissance aircraft approach as close as a few dozen kilometers from China land territory to conduct surveillance. American nuclear submarines collided with underwater mountains in the South China Sea. They are renovating one Pacific island base after another. The first and second island chains are like iron shackles around our necks. The United States can arbitrarily pass any report in Congress to deny any part of China territory. Not to mention, in the world that exists in media and the internet, despite China having engaged in no wars for decades, we are still distorted and vilified as the most evil country in the world.

I believe these are the real dangers. Comparing today's China to Germany in the 1930s is, in my opinion, entirely inappropriate.

And, let me be blunt, if China were to fully and perfectly execute everything the United States wishes it to do, our country would become some sort of oversized Disneyland. Those who claim to love Chinese culture could come to see farmers wearing conical hats standing in rice paddies. All the other People work in garment factories for generations. All the wealthy would immigrate to the United States. And their homeland would become a massive human museum—devoid of any hope. I believe this, too, represents a genuine danger.

Moreover, the kind of danger you mentioned—I’m not saying it doesn’t exist at all. In fact, there are indeed some people who, after witnessing the various unfair and unjust oppressions imposed by the United States on China, have developed a strong mentality of revenge and conquest. What suppresses this sentiment is precisely the CCP, which is so despised by American liberals. You are aware that speech censorship exists in China. But what you may not know is what exactly this censorship system suppresses.

good luck with that you mad bastard - if you are still alive you are going to have to pay people to attend games in the US whilst Canada and Mexico will have no bother

Think there’s next to no chance Putin attending the World Cup but if he did I’m not watching a single game. And would actively encourage others to do the same.

Wonder if FIFA have any contractual veto on certain individuals attending games. I’d imagine their contract is pretty watertight, but the host country must have certain overarching provisions around public order etc... Would be interesting to know who gets the final say!

Very well said.
The lying about and mockery of China must stop. The CCP have achieved great things in China for its' people. My knowledge of China comes from repeated visits over more than 25 years and from my own observations and thoughts on those observations.
China has its' critics but compare it to the U.S., a lot of whose population is on its' knees, both financially and morally.
China is leading the way now and we in the U.K., Europe and the U.S. need to open our eyes, open our minds, raise our consciousness and get to know really what China has accomplished and is continuing so to do.
We need to cooperate with and trust China more, they are not a threat to our way of life and they will not try to impose their will on us, and right now we need their help.

My impression is that China has modelled itself on the Britain of the 18th and 19th Century becoming the current ‘Workshop of the world’ but with some unsavoury moral issues.

If he did I wonder what game they’d pick, a usa game? I’d hope the American people would give him the welcome he deserves, I can see half empty Ty stadiums anyway as a lot of fans give it a swerve with rising costs and the shit show that’s going on, even better if the teams refused to play if he is at the game.

Think the stadiums are highly unlikely to be half empty mate, simply due to the interest from US fans. Think most of the games would be sold out from that source alone.

Today, the United States spends nearly $900 billion annually on military expenses.
That might be because the people that build the equipment are not paid $1 per day, and the people trained to use it make six figures? Or, maybe it’s because every time there is an “incident” somewhere in the world, the U.S. is asked to intervene from one of their lily pads around the globe.
It has formed various military alliances like AUKUS, the Quad, and others.
This is not only good, but also has helped keep the relative world peace for 80 years.
NATO's statements regard China, located far in east asia, as a threat or challenge.
They are, as they expand outwards, claiming land and open ocean as their own, and turn small islands into fortified military bases from which to project far beyond their natural border.
U.S. warships conduct "freedom of navigation" operations in the Taiwan Strait right at China's doorstep.
Putting that phrase in inverted commas highlights your bias and ignorance of international waters, in much the same way Trump did with the Venezuelan “drug boat”!!
U.S. reconnaissance aircraft approach as close as a few dozen kilometers from China land territory to conduct surveillance.
If they wander into YOUR airspace, let me know. Until then, they’re in international airspace. Also, are you suggesting China doesn’t conduct surveillance of American territory???
American nuclear submarines collided with underwater mountains in the South China Sea.
International waters.
They are renovating one Pacific island base after another.
You’re CREATING massive military airfields and more from sand bars that you build into “China” in the open ocean, then claim ADIZ AND TERRITORIAL WATERS around them, then complain (see above) when the world doesn’t suddenly steer clear of your projections.
The first and second island chains are like iron shackles around our necks.
Geography is a bitch, but…
The United States can arbitrarily pass any report in Congress to deny any part of China territory.
And the world listens??? If so, why???
Not to mention, in the world that exists in media and the internet, despite China having engaged in no wars for decades, we are still distorted and vilified as the most evil country in the world
That’s what happens when you crush democratic urges (Tiananmen Square and the Umbrella Movement ring a bell?!) and use concentration camps for the round up religious groups you don’t fancy!

The CCP is a danger to world peace, as is Trump’s America, Jung Un’s North Korea, Putin’s Russia, and even Modi’s India!

I see Trump's renaming The Pentagon as 'The Department of War ' - that should help the Nobel Peace Prize campaign, shouldn't it?

Reminds me of Vincent Tan - rename Cardiff, dress them in red, then they'll win everything. Yep.

Infantino is such a fawning **** there will be no veto " today I am Vladimir Putin " will be his line

I’m not so sure. One thing he is motivated by is money, as is the organisation he heads up. If it looked like Putin attending was going to be catastrophic for the WC I’m sure he’d do something about it if he could.

It'll be really odd if he turned up given that Russia isn't involved.

He's a duplicitous **** who heads up a corrupt organisation so you could be right as they do seem to make it up on the hoof - for example just from today
