The Album Review Club - Week #192 (page 1292) - 3ft High & Rising - De La Soul

The jerk-ass in me wants to type “Why didn’t you, then?” :)

This is much more country than what I expected and disappointingly so, though her lyrical gifts are wonderfully apparent. I prefer world-conquering-dance-pop as everyone knows :)
I'm surprised at that because I have a different take, but each to their own. We'll be able to discuss it via our respective reviews.

A quick take with the in-house expert says that "Mean" is the only true country track - and it's got banjo on it, so that's fine by me :)

Obviously not an expert on this but it has a more of an Avril Lavigne vibe than the country I was expecting. My initial thought was that Swift has been watching lots of young adult romantic comedies from the 90's.

As long as she’s never seen an episode of Friends…. ;)

My nieces love her. From what I've heard an average voice with a taint of country in a package aimed at the female teen.

She dropped any country a long time ago. It is all about the lipstick and boots these days.

Somewhat bizarrely my aforementioned niece has just popped round with her family. Finds it quite amusing we're discussing this. Her view...

We should be listening to Taylor's version because the vocals on it are stronger. (I explained we play the ball not the man but that meant nothing to her.)

When I insisted she put it in a genre box she went with Country Pop and said it was her crossover album.

Of course - we review and score editor's choices as normal.

Did you read my write-up? :)

I am familiar with a lot of the songs but not the full album. I also think that this contains one song that is up there with the best pop songs this century, but more on that later.

I wanted to pick an album between the initial country phase and the world-conquering dance-pop-where-have-all-your-instruments-gone phase. I consulted with my eldest daughter and decided that this was the most appropriate pick.

I didn't, as a matter of fact. But thanks for responding.

Remember I do this thing where I don't read the writeups until at least two listens in. Been doing it for a while in fact.

Wow cuz I don’t hear AL at all!

This is interesting how all of us are hearing different things. Looking forward to this review set.

And maybe Friends?

Fair point, I do remember that’s your MO, and not a bad one to be fair.

I doubt anyone will remember but a while ago I mentioned that it had crossed my mind to nominate a Swift album to see what we made of it and as preparatory work I listened to her top 5 ranked albums with a view to picking one but ultimately I abandoned the idea. I used the NMEs ranking and this album wasn't in the top 5 though it was close,

Having had a first listen it's at least the equal to a couple of the ones I listened to but some way off what I thought was her best effort. But pretty much all of the six I've now listened to, though often different in style, showcase the exact same strengths and weaknesses.

I go out and about in Manchester for a day, come back in from a fantastic pint or three at Mary D's and I get THIS???

What the bloody hell, Rob? You certainly didn't mention THIS this other night. ;-)

OK, I will admit I do know a bit about Taylor Swift, and that is ONLY because the now-canceled Ryan Adams did a remake of her 1989 album, and his version was much better after hearing the comparison of tracks after the fact. "Welcome to New York" and "Shake It Off", indeed.

I will only say this, I will NOT be listening to this album unless/until I make it back to US soil as my goodness there is no way this will be playing as I cross the Atlantic on the "longest day" this Friday.

Well, could have been easy
All you had to do was Stay

One the best Ryan Adams albums in recent years IMHO

I do remember, which is why I said in my intro that somebody even threatened to nominate TS (but it wasn't me).

Not directly, but I did say that it would be an album that was sure to cause a good bit of debate.

It was hammer that mooted it a few times. But he's still listening to the Lemonheads so doubt we'll hear from him on this one!
