RIP Ricky lad, you gave us some great moments, not just as a boxer but as a genuine Blue at a time when it was hard to be one.

We were in a box next to his at the Etihad, and my mate and his young lad were out in the seats when Ricky came out.
‘Can I punch your hand’ says 9 year old lad?
‘Of course you can mate’ says Ricky with a big smile on his face
Cue big smiles from lad’s dad
‘But only if I can also punch your Dad’s too’ says Ricky with a cheeky smile on his face

I never met or knew the man. But for people who aren't big boxing fans, or may be too young to remember his prime it is worth stating what a excellent fighter he was and well in the pantheon of great British boxers.

He was desperately unlucky in the case that he shared his prime with forces of nature in Pacman and Mayweather. Idiots who don't understand the sport refer to these fights without understanding the enormity of what he achieved.

Victories over Tsyzu, Castillo, Malinaggi and the best of what was an exciting British contingent with the likes of Magee and Thaxton are testament to his skills. Ring magazine figher of the year an numerous titles back that up as well. One of the best body punchers the sport had ever had.

Dreadful news for Manchester, you hope that a minute silence can be observed as respect to his family and for the many great nights/early mornings he was responsible for. A Hatton fight was usually weekend of fun.

Always thought the Magee fight was a coming of age fight for Ricky.
Got dropped from the tough irishman but got back up and attacked him to the final bell, winning the fight.

Thanks for that, the difference in his voice between this and the enthusiastic way he spoke, earlier on this morning before the news broke, about the fight last night is telling. A lot of love for Ricky out there.

Bunce is a relic of decades gone, I will miss him a lot when he finally retires fully, the man is so passionate about boxing it’s infectious.
