The NHS...2025.

I'v just had to phone e rostering this morning because I noticed I was taken off our online rota from august 4th in a few weeks, told my supervisors and manager last friday, nothing has been done about it,so had to phone e rostering and still nothing has been done atm.
the other week my " ESR " wouldn't let me log in,thats where you get your pay slips, training updates, pension info etc, no one knew why the system refused me to log in,had to go and sort it it myself , no wonder people get pissed off with the service,
Been waiting 6 weeks now to get a letter about physio , still not had it ,and Im back in work anyhow after having achilles teninitis in both feet.

My back to work interview at work I requested to see occupational health to discuss my problem two weeks ago when i returned to work, heard nothing and had to go and speak to manager last friday about it.
it's a shambles.

Paying £300 for a consultant for 15 minutes isnt either.

Neither is giving cancer patients bills for hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The American system is shit.
Ours is way better, I choose to pay for insurance in case I get cancer or something like a stroke, I will get immediate treatment, however if I want to I can revert back to Medicare, our free public health system anytime I want.
You can't do that in America.

What do you think a yank consultant would charge you for 15 minutes under their system?

My son lives in New York.
He needed a crown doing.
Despite having health insurance through work he still had to pay $2000 dollars himself towards it.

Yesterday my mother in law taking into hospital (against families wishes) from her care home. She has Parkinson's dementia and barely knows her own name. Some days she doesn't eat when asked why when able to reply she mumbles forgotten how to open my mouth.

Anyway family have a DNR in place and only to go to hospital if something like a broken bone etc. Yesterday she took some kind of allergic reaction to something (no one knows what). Her lips swoll up and she couldn't communicate (which some days are normal). In hospital they gave her morphine and some kind of antihistamine for the swelling. She hates hospital and has screamed non stop (while awake) since getting there 10 am yesterday morning.

I've been to visit this evening and she looks like she's had some kind of stroke (had TIAs in past).

Hospital have said swelling down nothing more then can do so ordered transport to take her back to care home at 4. Still hadn't turned up at 6. My other half queried it and they said turned up to the ward and no one there. It's booked again between 7-8.

Also today my father in law (aged 90) has urology appointment at 4 in same hospital so he went sat with wife. I met him at 3 and we went to urology. Checked in about 3.20 (he likes to be early). Didn't get seen until 6.05 (last 2 in waiting room)

I've took him home while my other half still waiting on transport.

We've appointment with care home manager and nursing staff on Monday to see why the wishes of no hospital visit were ignored.

My other half no one else but me, brother in US and sister in Australia. She's hanging by a thread at the moment as every decision comes down to her.

Anyway sorry you've had to read all this I just had to get it out of me

Sounds to me from afar that the whole system is overloaded, we have a public health system here in Oz ..I mean it's not perfect by any means but there's only like 25 million of us whereas there is 60 million or so in the UK, it's like a big monster of an organization that can't deal with so many patients and seems impossible to manage.
The absolute disgust of not being able to see a GP for weeks is disgusting considering that you are paying for this service in your national insurance which I imagine these days isn't a small amount.
Why is the government not sorting this out and employee many more GPS to take the pressure off hospitals?
Again I can see my GP the next day or if she isn't available I can see a different one ...maybe even the same day I ring.

If I moved back to the UK I would have to take out private medical insurance, I would not trust the NHS having seen evidence in my own family in the UK and things I have read about like on here, it's a sad thing to say that you don't trust the NHS as I grew up in the days when we had absolute trust in that system.... my mother in law died waiting for the NHS to fix her aortic aneurysm but she collapsed and died.
I'm sure the NHS do great things every day but if I got cancer or needed further open heart surgery I would not want to wait around for while they got their act together with tests and diagnosis.
They are not employing more GP's as they try to fill the jobs with advanced nurse practitioners and physician assistants (previously associates) as they are cheaper*.

The same thing is happening in hospitals with non-doctors taking on doctor roles as cheaper*, faster trained, and less regulated alternatives. Advanced surgical practitioners, advanced care practitioners, reporting radiographers, sonographers, nurses doing endoscopy etc. the list goes on. They even throw in confusing role names that literally do nothing but confuse patients e.g. "consultant" nurse/sonographer etc. They have done nothing to earn the title in terms of training, exams etc. yet a doctor spends a minimum of 12 years (usually significantly longer) training and innumerable exams almost on a yearly basis through that period to earn that title.

This has been the way of it for years now but recently the tide seems to be slightly turning, at least against physician assistants (hence the new name etc.).

My understanding is Australia is behind in this process, but is heading this direction also. For your sake lets hope they learn from the mistakes of the NHS and implement it in a more regulated and safe manner.

*This bit isn't even strictly true

Sounds a shit do, hope it all improves and quickly for you and your family mate.

Thanks mate, we've come home, next available transport at mid night and care home refused to take her then so she there until at least the morning

I went through hell with my mams care before she passed, your situation is a lot more complicated due to dementia. I can't have enough respect for people who put their own lives on hold for others.

I've been waiting for a inguinal hernia operation since April 2024 when I was referred by my GP to see a consultant. Turned into a proper nightmare, I was told to wait for summer holidays to pass because of queues before I registered with the hospital - a few were given to me as a choice - I picked the one with supposedly having the shortest waiting list. After three months of waiting nobody ever contacted me, so I called them back. It turned out they didn't have me registered, but after I had given them them my referral number they immediately "found" me. Instead of trying to accommodate me after I explained everything to them, they were more interested in how I obtained my referral number. No sorry, no 1% of empathy, nothing, I was just told the clinic is closed because of too many people and that was it. I was really mad, managed somehow to get to speak to their shift manager, who tried to explain to me the situation and to call back in February 2025 (The call was in late December 2024 when the letter said to call back if not getting the consultant letter by that time). Finally got my appointment in May and was seen by a really nice consultant who told me it was a medium size hernia in my lower belly slightly above testicles, but it diddn't look bad to him as I was in a good shape considering my age (59) but I am running 4-5 times a week and go to a gym 2-3 times a week. Told me not to do any heavy weights (dead lift, squats with heavy weights and to try to use any hernia harness as it would just made it worse considering the hernia place), but said I was ok running at lower speeds on flat terrain. The best part came when he said I ll need to wait minimum 6 months to be seen pre-op and then get the operation date. That means three City seasons at least with hernia. And I know two other people who had hernia operations, from the first GP appointment to the operation all in done in 3-5 months.
I just don't dare thinking how badly the things would have turned out if we hadn't got all that money into NHS after Brexit!

Morning update, hospital refused to let her go to her care home this morning due to safeguarding concern raised re bedsores. Can't find out who raised it (nurse says she's not aware of it and also why not raised when going to move her yesterday). I understand they have duty of care but it is in her notes that she does have bedsores due to fact she spends about 22/23 hours a day in bed. Few hours half sitting half laying on a massive wheelchair that can support her. This is definitely not in her best interests or best for her welfare.

Just the basic they should already have known if she had bedsores is not a lot to expect really is it?

Just read that a doctor at tameside hospital left his patient in the middle of an operation to remove the gall bladder to go to another operating theatre and was caught having sex there with a nurse. He returned to Pakistan where he continued as a doctor, but now he has been cleared by a medical practitioners tribunal after saying sorry and it won't happen again and now wants to come back to England to return to work for the NHS. Unbelievable!

After Shipman they were going to stop Doctor's policing themselves.
It never happened.
It's a total joke.

My wife has been trying for weeks to get reviewed by her consultant through the NHS, she even presented at A&E, and has just been given a date for mid November. She doesn't feel she can wait this long, so has booked to see him at his private clinic at The Alex next week instead. Whilst not all his fault, I hope he is too embarrassed to take the £300. Her care has been nothing short of woeful, mainly due to a complete lack of communication.

Cant fault the staff but I do wonder about the people in charge,
My 92 year old mum fractured her hip around 5 weeks ago and was in hospital for around 4 weeks, the day after she came home her foot swelled up so I got the local doctor out who was concerned about a blood clot & DVT so booked us in for a scan the next day,
The ambulance turned up around 8.15 in the morning, the scan was done arond 2.30 pm & we were finally dropped off at home by a ambulance at 1.30 in the morning!,
We are in Shropshire and when the hospital wanted to move mum from Shrewsbury to Telford because they needed the bed in Shrewsbury it took them just under an hour to arrange transport, when my 92 year old mum with a weak heart, faulty kidney, fractured hip and almost blind wanted to get home which is 10 miles down the road it took them around 11 hours to sort transport!,
This is a very short story which could be a lot longer but I was with mum all the time & tried everything I could to get her home but sadly with no help from the hospital whatsoever,
She is ok at the moment but I am having to care for her full time as the people in charge cant get a care package together?

Horror stories even 40 years ago nothing has really changed and it wont change until people get the idea of having an NHS with a million Barbara Windsor types running about like industrious Duracell bunnies overseen by a stern Matron.

Needs completely redoing top to bottom it's a shitstorm.
