The Album Review Club - Week #191 (page 1286) - Harlequin Dream - Boy & Bear

Yeah, I know a few people will like it. Given that you are familiar with their first two albums, I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on how it stacks up.
I feel I owe it to myself to at least revisit the first album, which I'm doing as well, just for context.

If I were to be honest with myself, I'd own one of their Greatest Hits compilations if I had one of theirs on CD, but I also see I never went back to do that as well at the turn of the century as my music interests had moved on.

So what you are saying is, it’s “Friends” music?

As one man once said, it’s funny how we hear things differently. For me, “A Girl Like You” is one of the singles of the decade. Brilliant guitar and vocals and the solo after the break is blistering and anything but average.

I’ve got nowhere to go after this nomination. Everything I nominate is considered “too nice”, “not enough edge”, “vocals are average” - actually, this last one is a huge compliment given some of the vocalists on this thread!

It’s country all the way after this round.
It doesn't sound banal enough for Friends music.

Nothing minted here. All from France, Germany etc etc. There was a mint in London but it was quite late but you do see them. There also might have been one in Colchester/ Southampton but that's hard to prove without a mint mark.

It was only the legions and ancillaries that got pulled out. Life for the average Joe continued but with added danger from Saxon raids. These had being going on for quite a while due to the Roman Empire imploding slowly.

I realise that but I thought the conventional wisdom was that we lost much of our production capabilities around metal, maybe that's something I've misunderstood. Anyway
this sediment core in the Aldborough study suggests pretty much continuous production with only a bit of disruption a couple of centuries after their final departure.

Though it's true I don't subscribe to your view on a girl like you., it's interesting that me describing it as pleasant is (understandably in the context of this thread) assumed to be a negative. I shall try and reclaim the word in my review!

As for country, I'm currently mooching round the kitchen humming Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain: so there's no point threatening punishment beatings to a masochist! In the same way AGDCFF was a hill I was prepared to die on there's at least one album by The Chicks I'd do the same with.

Unless, of course, we throw in the curve ball of an enforced 2025 and beyond round next time.

Fyi, I intend to offer up the 'album of the year' thread again for 2025, like last year. Sometime early December. So we should inevitably get some albums talked about in that, and at least a few from here took part last year.

It's got to be said @mrbelfry your reviews are absolutely superb! Weather I agree with them or not is another thing but they are always brilliant!

I honestly think "Friends music" has become one of the best phrases to come off this thread as well ha ha!
Life would be boring if we all agreed. We would have no united fans to laugh at

That’ll be good. After a long, barren spell, I have finally found a few albums worth playing in the last few weeks. And they’re only 30%, 40% and 75% country respectively:)

After my first listen today I was going to compare this to a cross between The Rembrandts & Elvis Costello. Except on this occasions Elvis doesn't rebel and plays exactly what he is told to by the shows producer. Nice guys playing nice music.

Whilst it was "nice" or middle of the road it was far more enjoyable than Tay Tay. It wasn't too taxing, didn't require too much time devoted to it and certainly had a bit more grit to it. That said, it wasn't in any way as gritty as Idles.

A band I had never listened to previously and one that I may look at a little more.

I've found that's been a pretty low bar to exceed since earlier this week. ;-)

Yeah, and I don't think The Smithereens would ever attempt in their alternative, garage, or straightforward rock style or try to be close to what Idles is. That (for me), is a good thing.

I'd recommend going back in time rather than forward, even though I could only find a live version of their first album on Spotify.

Perhaps their GH from 2019 that is on Spotify would help too as it has select tracks from both. It even has covers: Bruce Springsteen's "Downbound Train", the Beatles' "One After 909", and The Outsiders' "Time Won't Let Me".

Their first album is on Spotify in the UK. Gobsmacked it’s not in the US.

That cover of “Downbound Train” is fantastic, was listening to that earlier this year.

Not lime The Idles being a good thing - that’s the understatement of the year :)

Bands like The smithereens don’t push music forward, they just play a very catchy brand of rock and roll and that’s a fantastic thing. We don’t need every musician or band to push music forward or do something experimental, especially as 99% of those that do make unlistenable music.

Is it catchy though? Not really. 3 listens in, I couldn't off the top of my head sing a single line off it. They all muddle into nothing, or sound like other things that I would start than think, no wait, that's those other guys.

I listened to the Taylor swift album once and I could probably do 4 songs off it. The lemonheads, most of the album. Even Idles are catchier, because most that hear it could belt out a line off it.

If we are using catchy as a metric. Which luckily for this album I am not.

Edit - wholly agree music doesn't need to be different, or break boundaries. It just has to be good. Or not even always good. Just has to work.

A bigger shake-up would be a 'face your nemesis' round. Where we all have to nominate sometging that would qualify as our own antithesis (that we would actually like.

So I would have to put forward a country tinged album, bimbo some friends music, you something against convention and proper singing, fog something exploitative etc.

That's a horrible idea!

*Goes to check the friends soundtrack to see if Faith No More feature

Loved the Smithereens in the 80's.You knew what you were getting.
A bit like the Wedding present at the same time.
Funnily enough I find the Wedding Present stuff on Spotify poorly recorded as well with earphones on.
Might be an 80's thing.
