47 | Phil Foden - 2025/26

I have expressed my opinion many times on here that the greatest player City have had that I've seen live (and I've thought it over carefully) is David Silva — Merlin. For reasons I won't go into, because the thread isn't about him, he edges it from Kev and even from King Colin. Just a personal assessment.
But I swear that that pass last night, when you take account of how fast he had to think, and how despite that he slowed down time to deliver the perfect dink that left that defence for dead, was as good as any assist I saw Merlin make. It was filthy. It's up there with Merlin's pass for the final goal in the 6-1 — maybe even better, because brilliant as it was, Silva had a bit more time to think, sent it in the general direction of Edin, and United's defence was terribly exposed at that point. (The strong point about Merlin's assist is of course that he plucked it out of the air, on the volley. You don't see that every day).
Anyway, comparisons are unnecessary.
If Phil can move in the direction of his best, and if Rod can move in the direction of his best, it could have a big impact on the PL season. Phil isn't quite there yet, and Rod is still some way off. But if…
I was bold enough to be saying these things about a decade ago on these boards
I got laughed at by some.
That deft touch pass last night really made folk wake up to his skills
Id been waxing lyrical about his ability on BM 9 years ago...I said he was a better player than Silva...he is
I also said, that he should have been in the first team at 17 years old .... replacing Silva .. ..he was that good
I was clearly wrong on the last point...but in my mind,at the time I was more interested in home grown stars, after Watching Mel Machin introduce so many talents from the old youth team to me it seemed a natural thing to do.
Lol ..I think Pep knows better than me how to introduce a young mancunian to the tough world of central midfield play,at the highest level.

But the talent of Phil Foden was there for all to see on his debut v utd which I watched " live " in America ..pre season friendly
I was astounded by his debut..as was Pep, who said it was the best debut he'd ever seen before.and that includes Messi.
So I sort of knew I was on the right track ; )

It cannot be overstated just how important a fully fit Phil is to our prospects. The signs in the last two games are very promising, albeit against a piss poor rags side and a (on the night), underwhelming Napoli side. I also think that Haaland will thrive with an on-form Phil in the team.

Hadn't realized just how good his ball through was to Erling for the sending off. Add in his genius for our second and he single handedly won us that champions league match with two world class moments against good opposition. A city boy and academy product.

Phil inspiring us to another European cup has got to be the dream

A few years ago when Foden had his best season after upping his goalscoring, I said the next thing he needed to improve on was his link-up play with Haaland as I’d never thought they had much of a chemistry with each other. Foden never really had through balls to Haaland in his game.

Obviously, last season was a bit of a write-off for Foden, but in recent games he seems to be displaying some progression with that.

De Bruyne leaving opens up this opportunity for Foden to be the main man who supplies Haaland now.

He's the 1 player you can't take your eye off when city are in possession, little movements between lines.
Very noticeable that after 20 minutes rodri started to play those type of passes to get Phil on the half turn.
Worked his bollocks of as well
Phil looks to be enjoying himself again which is great news for city and bad for the rest of the league.
It is indeed very bad news for the rest of the premier league.

One thing that infuriated me with our team and with England when it comes to Foden was that Foden was always wanting passes to feet when he had a man near him and could get a turn on them, but he rarely got passed the ball in that situation… but he thrives in that situation.

I too noticed Rodri was giving him the ball like this the other night.

How are you feeling? everything ok?

Front four of:

————Haaland————
Doku——————Cherki
————-Foden————-

…could be very good!

Haaland and Foden are 25, Doku is 23 and Cherki is 22. So, could be a four that can grow together over 5+ years.
Yeah, just swap Cherki and Doku’s sides

Steady on, my friend;)

it’s clear he’s at his best in the ten position. Hopefully he’s not forced out wide again

He's one of several players that's true of. I always considered it to be true of Jack. Also, in many ways, Bernardo is not really and truly a winger. At least not any more. His change of pace, which was never startling, has now gone. We've now got full blooded wingers — Doku, Bobb, Savinho — and we should use them as such. (Mahrez was a genuine winger, Leroy was the purest and most exciting winger we've had in the last ten years).

Some magical assists and passes from Phil in the last 2 games. He's also got players like Doku and Haaland who are on fire and making runs for him. It's easier to express yourself when the players around you are playing well

It was as good as anything we've seen from Kev

You will see.
Phil Foden is definitely a better all round player than David Silva.
For a start our Phil can use his right foot...see wolves away, right foot back heeled goal.

I agree I think you'll be able to say that looking back on his career, but I don't think you can say that yet.

Also, sometimes comparison is the death of joy. It's been a privilege to watch both of them.
