Charlie Kirk shot dead at Utah university

Perhaps I’m being unfair, but Trump looks like he is loving every minute of this. Andhell bent on using it to the max.

They all are.

Some quite bizarre claims being made in posts on X how the late HM the Queen was a huge fan of Charlie Kirk and was impressed by his devotion to Christianity.

Clearly she will never have heard of him but I wonder what his UK followers who laughably claim to be Christian and also Monarchists are happy with the twin pillars of their beliefs being exploited for gain?

It's important to not compare religious faith with support for monarchy despite the latter's attempts to conflate them.

There’s a reckoning coming and I just hope it isn’t too messy.
In the 2026 midterms.
If Republicans can gerrymander them enough to keep control of Congress then there's little hope left except for taking to the streets. (And if that happens the old slogan "they've got the guns but we've got the numbers" will be shown to be as daft as it always was.)

I think it's well known the Queen at 95 years of age would scroll through tik tok in bed at night watching clips of the 'WATCH THIS LIB GET OWNED' and 'KIRK DESTROYS WOKE IDIOT'

Americans have been indulging in political violence since before their Civil War.

It's part of their culture, and we should respect that. We must just hope and pray it isn't imported here, like many other vile aspects of their culture have been.

You probably know about Preston Brooks. the pro-slavery Congressman from South Carolina who in 1857 (?) attacked the abolitionist senator Charles Sumner with a cane and beat him to unconsciousness on the Senate floor. In the weeks that followed Brooks received gifts of hundreds of new canes to replace the one he broke in his fury, many of them marked with messages like "hit him again."

The same sentiments are alive in the American Right today. I don't see what's to "respect" about it though.

I feel sorry for the kids but then i felt for all the kids that he said were acceptable gun deaths so they could keep the right to bear arms

Pair of cunts
I feel sorry for the kids having to grow up in a household where they will be radicalised from an early age with or without their father. They really should be taken into care but unfortunately half the population has already been radicalised not just a lunatic fringe, so the radicalised have become the mainstream. I feel for the other half of the population who haven't fallen for it and whose lives are very likely to become quite difficult over the next few years.

They are but I think what you are seeing isn't a left v right polarisation in the traditional sense and to characterise it as such downplays what is really happening. For about a hundred years (and prior to this it was our direction of travel) our arguments around how left or right our governments should be, have taken place in the context of what we often abbreviate to Western Liberal Democracy.

This is a different situation, what is currently happening in the US isn't just a different flavour of traditional politics, it's a direct assault on the system that has been in operation for at least century. Its the difference between people who still consider that liberal democracy, warts and all, is still a better way to govern ourselves vs people who are seeking to install (or happy to be living under) authoritarian governments for whom democracy is an impediment to them imposing their will, be that theocratic or economic.

if you read some of the writings of the silicon valley great and the good, it's clear that they see themselves as more capable and able to run the world than our current models of government; and they're not even the worst of the unholy alliance of would be dictators.
Agree with all that. It is much more nuanced. What bothers me is the dismissal of some conservative Christians (I am an atheist) as all Nazis, racists, and fascists. And those liberal leaning people as “woke commies.” There is so much tribalism. I am a moderniser who hates our current anti-democratic corrupt system which has failed most of the country. I don’t want the current model replaced by fascism but radical change is needed and tech will have to be the main driver of that change. And I am a centrist not in one of the tribes.
