AS Monaco (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

We tied because of a shocking decision by the referee and a cross bar wearing a Monaco jersey

Our own striker thinks differently. I agree with him we didn’t play well in the second half gave Monaco a way back in.

Come on man. Its a high boot. Dangerous play. That's a pk in the Prem 99% of the time. Nico didn't see him. Its not his fault but, its a pk.
So if he had left his leg up like a ballerina for five seconds with the ball gone to the center circle and Dier had rammed his head into it, that would be a foul.

The ball was gone. Dier was late. The replays show this, clearly. It’s a discretionary call and the referee made it in Monaco’s favo(u)r.

Says it as it is, our future captain doesn’t he?

(Though tbf, I did think Bernardo made some spot on comments as well post match)

I thought Gonzalez was excellent. In fact, I think he performed better than Rodri in the 37 minutes he played. The reason for my MoTM award to him, is not just because of tonight's performance, it's because he's crucially lessening our reliance on Rodri during his comeback from the ACL.

Rodri's position & RB are our two biggest weaknesses, & over the last 2-3 games, Gonzalez has begun to show that he maybe the solution to one of those major positional issues we have.

Of course Haaland getting two goals would immediately make him a MoTM contender, but he'll collect enough of those if he carries on like he is for the rest of the season.

It's Gonzalez who we need to encourage to keep putting in performances like tonight's as we try to fill that huge Rodri sized hole we have when he's not playing.

As Pep said, for now, Rodders can't play every three days, so we need to look beyond him for a permanent rotation solution. Based on what I'm seeing, perhaps Nico Gonzalez is the player we need.

He's certainly putting in better performances at this stage of his City career than Rodri was...
As I said I don’t disagree that Gonzalez looked good tonight or in his latest outings. He is clearly a very talented individual and is still learning the system.
I do like the fact he tends to look forwards probably more than Rodri and his passing game looks pretty solid.
I think the defensive side of his game is improving but still a considerable way off Rodri of 2 years ago, particularly in terms of his positional play but as we agree it will take time to get where he needs to be.
I think getting more minutes this season as Rodri plays himself back into match fitness will be excellent for him and ultimately he has the potential to be a solid first choice in midfield.
Very promising signs so far.

Just got back from game, same old stuff, trying to defend a lead rather than attack. Never mind, Pep came out at the end and did a wave. Worth the trip alone.

The amount of times the split second pass is on to him, but instead we regurgitate the ball. Used to have players that could play him in through the eye of a needle - not currently. Reijnders is the biggest disappointment..... so far.
True. There's so many times where someone like De Bruyne or David Silva would see the movement and send him running. The players we currently have just aren't doing it.

I like Reijnders and I think he will come good, but he needs to be a little more fearless. Sometimes we play like we're terrified of making a mistake instead of being confident in our ability.

I disagree with his comment regarding the penalty - however this isn't the thread for suggesting that somebody's political persuasion has any bearing on their football ideology. Grow up - and please stop trying to score points on issues that are not football related. This thread is called AS Monaco (A) | CL | Post Match Thread, not BBC Question Time ffs. Stop being so obsessed with politics and you'll probably have a clearer mind for other pasttimes.
His judgment across nearly all topics is the same IMO: poor.

That’s now Erling fuming , Rodri pissed off at the start of the season and Bernardo calling out the team last season something isn’t right.
I mean we ain’t winning every other game and it might not be like that again. Bernardo can call out the team as much as he wants when he is clearly one of the weaker links

It is good that they still have that winning mentality. Again not the sparkling performance but we did have the chances to kill the game off.
