The graph doesn’t appear to be using that metric.Ah, they were grammars paid for by the state, the local authority, and endowments.
Both MGS and WH were Direct Grant schools, ie they joined a central gov scheme of finance in 1945.
This is sadly, unquestionably true. And there were lots of inequities about the grammar school system but it did (in conjunction with free higher education) at least give smart, working class kids a chance to be socially mobile in a way that simply isn’t available today. Don’t think bringing them back (in a universal sense) is feasible but their widespread abolition has in many ways reduced social mobility and presumably has led to a significant increase in the percentage of kids being educated privately in the last half century.
As a former grammar school student, I think it was the Blair era push for everyone to go to university that stopped Grammar schools being a vehicle for social mobility.
As soon as everyone starts going to university, Grammar schools getting working class and lower middle class kids into universities they wouldn't if left in the local comp until 16 stops being the massive leg up it used to be.
Successive govs have made a bollocks of secondary and tertiary education.
The 1944 Education Act envisaged a strand of of technical schools which has never been implemented. But that strand has been very successful in Germany who just copied it from our Act. When the tories converted polytechnic colleges to unis in 1992 they should have inculcated tertiary technical education, but instead we got a load of nonsensical degrees from these new unis. (My then neighbours’ daughter got a degree in TV Make-up. It was academic rather than practical.) When Blair decreed that 50% of all youth should go to university, the same mistake was made.
Now we struggle to get the apprenticeships needed.

It's obviously a coincidence that this peace deal is going through the day before the Nobel is announced isn't it, you know, obviously a coincidence ....Trump now as short as 6/4. As much as I despise him, I'd hand him the friggin' prize myself if he can get this peace deal over the line. It would be the one decent thing he's done in his life, even if he is only doing it for his own ego.
Some mental names further down the betting. IDF at 66/1 FFS!
