I have been to a few places in the last year or so where very strange tip culture is starting to creep in. Mrs and I went for a meal today in a Pizza restaurant where the food was really good, half decent value and will more than likely go again. However when we went in, we got sat down at a table and the waitress said you could go to the bar to order or "the best way is to order on the app". No problem with ordering off the app, but as you pay it is asking for 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% or other amount tip. There is a button at the bottom that says maybe another time. I find this really weird as I am not against tipping but I would like to do it at the end of service? All that had happened was we had been sat down at our table.

We went to a couple of bars in London about 6 months ago too where we had just ordered a couple of drinks at the bar and the drinks had not even been served before you pay and being asked to tip.

Am I missing something?

You were asked to pay before you got your drinks? Mental

I'd say the majority of Manchester City Centre pubs now have the tip option on the card reader when you're paying for drinks. On one hand I can understand it. Tips must have virtually dried up to next to nothing in a lot of pubs where it's nearly all, or in a lot of places now, compulsory to pay by card.

On the other hand, it every so slightly irritates me, that what is supposed to be a contactless operation, requires me to press a button to get rid of the tip option first.

When I come across a bartender I don't like the look of, I like playing a little game of cat and mouse, where I refuse to read the screen and just keep trying to press my card on it and see if he gives up first and leans over and clears the tip screen first.

I went for a curry last week and they tried to sneak a £20 service charge on to the bill!
Had that in a place a couple of months ago too. Was 10%. Nothing on the menus or anywhere else to say it.

Absolutely not - tipping ONLY comes at the end, even if they charge up front, the tip will ONLY come seperate and after - many restaurants put a mandatory service change on these days, but only just once did I ever insist it was removed - Gaucho's in Regent Street if you were interested - was enough to get the Restaurant Manager to come out and argue the toss until I described precisely why they didn't deserve it (wrong meals and big gaps between meals of same serving) - they backed down then.

So unlike us to follow the American modle. In those heady days when it was cash and not about 7 quid a pint in town most people just tipped the staff.
Modle? Just curious if I’ve been away from the English love of French or it was autocorrect.
Honestly not trying to pick fault, curious
