Private number plates

That people are so.....

(I don't know; is it proud of? is it attached to? who really knows)

....what is essentially a lump of metal with a few bits of plastic and rubber added to it (which has the singular purpose of making one's life less challenging by allowing you to travel to other places more quickly and easily), that they feel the need to spend extra to personalise it and show the world that it is theirs, utterly bizarre and beyond my comprehension.

I don't get it. It's a fucking car, nothing more than that, in my opinion.

Surely there are more important things in life to garner pride from?
Their opinions are obviously different from mine.

I just think that these people are the sort who appear to be so insecure in themselves that they need status symbols, possibly to prove their self-worth, possibly to make up for inadequacies they feel they have in other areas of life, but like I said earlier, utterly alien to me.

Each to their own I suppose. Not the sort of thing I'll ever feel the urge to spend any amount of money on.

Shallow……most I know with ‘personalised’ number plates are cunts

I know what you mean, but I can't go too overboard with my criticism as my (now dead) sister had one and she was a really nice person (well, she was to me :)

I just don't get it. If you've got a spare couple of hundred quid (or even a grand or more) that you don't know what to do with, just give it to a charity or something, or at least spend it on something that enhances your (or preferably somebody else's) life a little. A weird collection of letters and numbers on your car achieves absolutely nothing for anybody.

It's a "status symbol" that does nothing to make your life better or more enjoyable, and as you say, simply labels you as a **** to those around you.

Each to their own.

You must enjoy something in life. What do you spend your money on?

Lots of things that make my life, and the lives of those that I care about, better and easier; but certainly not on sticking expensive labels on inanimate objects to simply show the watching world that it belongs to me.

I just find it odd and a little... (as Mr Barnet said) ...shallow.

What makes you think that someone who spends £400 on a number plate, which is their's forever, doesn't also donate to charity or help fellow human beings?
My brother in law has a private plate which he enjoys, and he won volunteer of the year for the second year in a row last week

‘Look at me’ plates….

Each to their own I suppose. I just feel sorry for the people that have been bought one as a present. It is pretty hard to pass that one on at Xmas!!

‘Look at me’ plates….
Exactly, what sort of volunteer needs/asks/wants/celebrates being rewarded with accolades? The giving IS the reward.

"Volunteer of the year" is yet another alien concept to me, and I'm not so sure that this "brother-in-law" is doing things for others rather than for themselves.

Again, just my opinion.

There’s a reason they’re called ‘vanity plates’…
Yeah, yeah.

I certainly didn’t buy mine for vanity reasons, or so that people would get down on their knees in front of my car and do the we’re not worthy thing, which happened a couple of times when I first got it. I got it because I thought it was a better investment than any City merch I could buy and I am sure it is worth thousands of pounds more than I paid for it. I bought it because the opportunity presented it self to buy from the DVLA out of the blue and I had to make a quick decision. I bought it because I am a City fan and we were in the third tier of English football at the time so vanity had fuck all to do with it.
