Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

agree with all of that except the Pep bit....

I think again like last season he knows we arent strong enough....

I said during the summer that we had too many average players...issues at fullack, CDM and wingers....got roundly jumped on by some regulars on here.....but here we are....Like you say, we got away with it over the last few weeks playing some bang average teams and gettting results...but against the better teams we will struggle and that list of better teams is growing
I don't understand not playing Kovacic OR Nico Gonzalez, it was clear as day the midfield wad light, Reijnders isn't a holding midfielder as he can't sense danger. Savinho starting again I just don't understand it, that's on top of him lasting 83 minutes.

Surely Marmoush and Cherki could have been given the nod today as Bobb, Doku and Savinho aren't doing enough.

Anyway, I don't know where we go from here, this isn't an easy fix.

We're in the mix for top four and that's it. Arsenal six points clear and we have Liverpool next. Now I know their results haven't been great lately but do you see us stopping them scoring and scoring ourselves?
We have Bournemouth next

To be fair we still have a lot of fucking injuries. I wonder if Guardiola even knows what his best starting 11 is.

Maybe tongue in cheek but trust me Guardiola would walk if he didn’t think he could improve us and win things.
In my mind it comes down to a simple choice. Who do you want as your manager, Pep or someone else. I’m choosing Pep every time
I’m choosing Vinny/dave/kev/sergio every time as well but unfortunately time caught up with them. There’s a few managers in the prem that are out performing him with less resources.

we been much better than last two seasons here, thats the positive for me.

Pep told us before the game why he could not started Nico, Rodri is out, so many here moaning brainlessly as usually. We do not really lost the midfield battle anyway, we just did not create enough and been unlucky: few blocks, last second interceptions, rebounds all went Villa's way.

Savinho made few things happen, actually his sequence of two shots, last off the line been good. Reijnders been decent, hes just not a 6. Foden been decent, but we need more out of his talent in a game like this. Bernardo, Stones rather poor. Bobb very poor, couldnt create anything and couldn’t time his runs to get on the end of balls played across the box. So sad to say, but hes been a definition of useless today.

11 very technically gifted footballers the majority of whom could not impose themselves playing an academy

Look completely disinterested and have no creative ideas or game plan

Stealing a living
Agreed. What they need is someone in charge, someone to manage them, someone to tell them how to play, someone to say "suicidal high line - don't do that". Someone to say "we keep getting these corner things, shall we practice then during the week?". Someone to say "through ball on to haaland - give it a go, it's ok if it doesn't always come off", someone to say "you can cross to a player rather than smack it as hard as you can in the vague direction of the penalty spot." Now what's that called again?

To think after 9 games we are level on points with that shite team over in Stretford tells you a lot. To those saying being critical is not on I honestly think Erling's goals have papered over some glaring issues with the team.

Given how we play the wide men should have about 3-4 goals between them 13 games into a season. Doku has 0 in 8 and Savinho has 0-5 Bobb has 0-7 (mainly sub appearances to be fair) but you get the point. That is the issue nothing much else. Then add Phil not scoring alongside non of our DM's getting goals and teams know defend Haaland and you stop us. Pep has to fix that. I believe we have the players but looking at today as an example keeping some of our biggest threats on the bench is not working.

I am so pissed at the performance and it hurts to lose to a team that has McGinn and Onana as their main midfield. They beat us because they wanted it more and that is not acceptable if you want to be a team challenging.

I'd like to know the results when we play with 2 out and out wingers over the last 2 years but I'd guess they would not be the best. When we do our midfield looks vulnerable and not balanced. We were at our imperious best when we had either wide players who scored/created a lot or when we had one winger with one of our better ball retention players out wide.

So where do we go from here? Of course we have to get behind Pep and his coaches but there has to be a change of ideas - we cannot go on just hoping Erling wins us matches. Today should be a wakeup for them - you have to create and score from other areas or teams will continue to sit back and attack on the transitions which without Rodri we are not fit enough to deal with - shocking.

Onward and upward I guess, but for me the first name on the team sheet in the next PL game has to be Cherki just to give him a go and give him some confidence to make us tick rather than keep saying he has to learn to defend first.

Yes I do .. I see us winning the game comfortably, against a team with a defence set up for City to plunder .. A very long way to go and the Arse will bottle it again, as they always do..

I'm not interested in this modern obsession with stats. They don't score goals or defend, they are meaningless tripe.
Whilst stats can sometimes be interesting I think it’s a stretch to absolve Phil from a poor performance overall because he had a few moments where he played a key pass.
He was poor, nothing wrong with thinking that because it’s true. Shame as he had looked more like himself recently.

No Rodri or Nico to break up play & Playing Reijinders there was arrogant by pep to be polite. Not starting Doku & O'Reilly too when they didnt play 90 mins midweek ffs?! What the fuck was Pep thinking?! Whats he saving young players for?! Swansea? They can play loads as they have young legs. Just like Brighton & Spurs that defeats on Pep selection & tactics. Love the guy for what hes won but sometimes hes stubborn & his selection doesnt make sense. We looked a far better team when Nico, Doku & O'Reilly came on. They start that game we get at least a point.
