Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

This is what we are looking at with the quality of the wingers now.

Sterling 225 games in Prem for us including as a sub- 91 goals

Mahrez - 145 games - 43 goals

Sane 90 games - 25 goals

Doku/savinho/bobb combined

127 games - 8 goals

Unless that changes then we will have more of these games!

Haaland has one off day and we don’t score!

Well there’s the answer, looking at this. Of course there’s also injuries, players ageing, etc which compound it, but it seems our major issue is having useless wingers.

How can a club seemingly so well run, and diligent not see these stats? Why the fuck didn’t we sell Savinho to Spurs? Why not loan Bobb?

It’s so glaring, we should be all over Semenyo in January, and meantime starting with Cherki and Marmoush every game.

Yeah. Crucially of those 18 shots, only 3 were in the half that was most important. Villa sat back second half and probably got the feeling we weren’t going to score so were happy for us to have the ball more. Even then how many saves did Martinez make? I can’t remember any of note

No big saves we played to safe! Haaland had that header but when you in the pen area at standstill it’s hard to get power, maybe sometimes he should stand outside the pen area watch the play on the wings and have them cross it high in the box then Haaland can see way the ball going to make a run to have more power when heading it! When teams pack the pen area Haaland needs to move more when our play is on the wing for me..

That's pretty damning.

Not sure anything will change on that front any time soon either.

Foden isn't scoring much anymore and we've lost KDB's and Gundogans goals too.

Best wingers in the world would find it hard up against 2/3 players marking them then blockers in the pen area! Unless pep tells them to just make half yard then cross it in the box it be like this when teams double treble up on our wingers! Seems we a reluctant to just cross from outside the box with an in swinger! We are to predictable!

Agree about Wirtz, too early to say, but he looked electric on the rare occasions I saw him play for Bayer and Pep could obviously have got a lot more out of him than Slot.

Rice gets in our team in front of Gonzalez, Kova, Reindeer, Nunes (as a CM). It was a false economy refusing to stump up the fee needed to sign him.

Bellingham is just what we need and what we’ve needed for a good couple of years now, he’d be perfect for us

Rice would have been too. And we even bid for him.
Money ALWAYS talks. Bid and pay enough, you get anyone.

We’ve been far too complacent with transfers, or tried to be too clever instead of signing obvious talent that would improve us.

Brilliant post and as others have said, that is pretty damning!

The glaring problem with Savinho is his decision making. Hardly ever gets the final ball / bit right. He’s basically a Brazilian Jesus Navas.

Frustrating as fuck, as his directness and ability to beat a full back are really good.
He’s worse. Navas scored 6 goals and 13 assists in his first season. He was a constant threat. Yet also super annoying at the same time. Should’ve had about 25 assists that season.

O Reilly does nothing to change that game as he showed with that abysmal performance when he came on.

He and so many other are part of the problem, just average “jobbing” lower Prem players.

The solution to that result can't be found with that group. Just aren't good enough, simple.
Disagree.

Some players will not affect game from the bench, most actually.

Nico is one of those and should be starting games, Doku too.

Savinho and Bobb plus, I'm always uneasy with Nunes, he shouldn't be starting a tough away game!

6 points dropped at Brighton and Villa who were both shite.

Title there for the taking and we piss about picking players who should not be starting!

I’m surprised at those Navas numbers mate! He was always incredibly frustrating imo.

You get the point I was trying to make though.

Savinho probably takes half an hour to decide which hand he’s going to have a wank with.

We haven't got any full backs for at the moment and only have one full back. Al Nouri. Also we are not physically strong enough in the middle; Barry, Milner, De Jong, Yaya, Fernie, Rodri, etc

We start off the windows talking like we're going to Stratstones.....but end up at Motorpoint.

I'm really fucked off about the two-handed push by Rogers on Gvardiol and var thinking nothing of it. And neither did the commentators, but they were biased throughout.

But I'm also annoyed about the shove in the back by Rogers on Nunes in injury time, shoving him off the pitch when it was going out for their goal kick.

It's just really dangerous and was unneeded anyway. There's been serious injuries, and worse, recently due to players hitting advertising boards/walls around the pitch, so that kind of thing needs stopping.

Not judging at all here - as Villa Park is as shite as the Etihad to get home from - but I was a little surpised that at the final whistle, the majority of our fans headed to the door, leaving Pep and the boys to applaud an almost half empty away end. I know it was shite from the 10th min onwards, but I always belive that they you acknowledge the players, come win, draw or lose. As I said, not judging anyone....
The away fans always stay so that to me sounds like a statement from those who travelled that today wasn’t good enough, which is their right. I’m glad they did

I’m probably being over harsh as the comparisons aren’t like for like.

Wingers by their nature are annoying. 9/10 things don’t work. That 1 that does is everything.

our current wingers are poor quality but they don’t have a prime David Silva doing inside out passes to get them free in behind. Sterling and Sane probably wouldn’t have posted nearly as many goals and assists without his magic.

The premier league is full of mediocre teams and we’re one of them.
You nailed that! The current club relies too much on Haaland's output to carry a team of hasbeens and never good enough players. Some people think Rodri playing full time will make this team world class again but that's clearly naive and presumptuous. The level of play since winning treble has been shocking to say the least.

Maybe everyone was bored today and just wanted to fuck off home

There was nothing to applaud
