47 | Phil Foden - 2025/26

Not back to his best yet but still better than all the rest bar Haaland

This is one of those ones that doesnt pass the eye test I think. If he created chances they weren't clear, and he wasted a lot of advanced positions.
He's being limited by playing with sub par wide players. As is Reijnders. What eye test are you referring to? The one that looks at players strictly as independent individuals? Take out Foden and Reijnders and you'll find out very quickly what a bad idea that is...

This is fair.. he takes free kicks and corners and if we're honest (not hating the player) he's below average on them. He's not a penalty taker either.

It is what it is.. we need a dead ball specialist. Or more likely we need to create one in training.
Or even look like we have some imagination like we have seen from Arsenal and even England in the past. Surely out of the 20+ professional 1st team players we have, there is somebody who can whip in a corner to put the keeper under pressure or to hit players who are stood in areas with intent (like The Dippers do on corners).
I heard that our last goal from a corner was 12 months ago at Wolves?

Foden has quality to be a decisive player, but I don't know if he's mentaly strong. Could dribble more in middle areas to create advantages, but always look for 1st touch pass. He needs to understand when is the time to assume that responsibility, the right choice. Also penetrate the channels between FB&CB and not just await to turn for the long shot or killer pass. For example, Iniesta or David Silva always knew when to play a 1-2 or dribble to create advantages in tight spaces.

He also need to decide if he's a second striker or a N.#10.

We’re missing a superstar midfielder in the prime KDB, Silva, Gundo sense. Someone who will unlock the defence or score an important goal when we need it. We’ve got good players but we are not title contenders without having that creative difference maker. Especially to find Haaland over and over again.

Foden is the only one with the talent to do this. He’s obviously one of our best players at his current level but he really needs to step it up further and be the best player on the pitch game in game out. If he does we could challenge

The pressure is now on a hopefully fit Cherki to become that player as it looks like Foden is not going to take over the KDB or Silva type role, not to say he isn't a superb player. Both of them need to play together, starting next sunday, with Marmoush in there too and ditch the ineffective wingers, with only possibly Doku as the wide option. Bobb, Savinho and Silva should start at Swansea, though I have the feeling Guardiola will do it the other way round !

It's fucking abysmal.

I miss the 21-22 season.. we scored 17 goals off corners that season and only conceded 1.

Then Arsenal poached our free kick coach and they've all been shit ever since!

One of best in world on turn but doesn’t do it enough now and quite often at the end of them turns he would be banging one in top corner hopefully he gets back to best this season he seems happier so that’s a start

It’s funny, when he comes on in games like this - he stands out as a ridiculously good footballer. Something we sometimes take for granted.

To be fair it’s not all about goals or assists. He’s been hugely influential to our side this season

We can’t always just rely on him and haaland to get us out of it though

While im all on board with this new Foden being molded into more of an 8 rather than 10/false 9 kind of player, im somewhat worried if it re-wires his brain too much to the point that he passes even when he should shoot like he sorta did today.

He needs to still get goals like prime Gundogan did, while balancing that deeper midfield support role, definitely tricky and almost counter intuitive, but that's the only way for him to be top again in this new position.
