Was sent an article from the Guardian (yeah I know) that listed teams who had never played each other either in league games only, or in any domestic competition including the cups
They ranked them by the combined number of league seasons in their respective histories
It turns out that City v Exeter City is joint third on the all time list
  • 217 Manchester United (123) v Gillingham (94), Manchester City (123) v Exeter City (94)
Top is Everton and West Brom, both v Rochdale (222 combined league seasons)

In terms of clubs who’ve never faced each other in league games only, City v Rochdale is joint 18th on the list at 217 seasons (City 122, Rochdale 95)

Top of this list is Everton v Walsall (231 combined seasons)

In fact we’ve only played Dale once ever in a competitive game, a League Cup tie in Sept 1972 (won 4-0)

Of course this doesn’t take into account clubs who we’ve never faced and which have only come into the league more recently, with the advent of promotion from the conference/national league. So the likes of Bromley, Harrogate, Crawley, Stevenage, Fleetwood etc

We’ve faced Barnet, Burton, Barrow, Accrington in cup ties

There are also teams that we have played but not very often - Bristol City being one that springs to mind

Remember us playing Bristol City in the (I think) 1977-78 season in Division 1.

I also remember us playing Exeter City away in the League Cup under Kendall (unless my mind is playing tricks!).

Only one City though!

Nope, never played them ever, as @Gary James excellent history page on this very forum confirms
Strangely I have watched a game at that stadium
While at uni in Bristol I went with a Stokie mate (now the chairman!) to watch them play Exeter away just after Alan Ball took over the latter, having been sacked by the Potters. Absolutely toxic, pitch invasions by the Naughty 40 etc

Pretty sure we have played Bristol City and Exeter City

Potter!

Gary. I had visions of Rick Holden scoring at Exeter... but now I know it was Bristol Rovers... getting my west country away games mixed up
I think the fact it was played at Bath probably added to the unusual aspect of it, though they played there for some time. The Video is well worth watching via my earlier link. It shows both the Maine Rd and Twerton Park games.

We played Bristol City in the League Cup twice if I remember.
Sergio last minute winner in the 1st leg at a time when Bristol was a bit of a team and a giant killer.
Pretty sure we played them as recent as a few years ago in the fa cup.
Yeah we’ve played them, as my OP said they’re just one of those long established teams we strangely haven’t played very often over the years

It was Torquay in the League cup not Exeter early 90s.

What's all this nonsense about never having played Bristol City?

I can remember City drawing 2-2 with Bristol City at Maine Road in 1965. Ralph Brand scored one of his two goals for City. I also remember going to a 1-1 draw in the return match that season at Ashton Gate.

Yeah we’ve only played them 26 times lol
