Swansea City (A) | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

Probably this is out best chance at silverware... but honestly, I couldn't care less about this trophy.

Win the league. Win the C/L. Win the F/A cup. Everything else is a participation trophy.
Nonsense its on par with the FA Cup and it would represent a reasonably successful season if we won it and get top four.

From 1976 till 2012 I think many blues would have walked to Wembley if it meant they could see City lift the League cup. My lad went fron age 6 to 42 before he saw City lift a trophy again. How wonderful being a City supporter then, especially from 1992 till 2011 when we had to put up with entitled rags in Manchester, now our 'supporters' are doing the same ;-(

Bask in the glory of a side winning the fucking League Cup if you will - how fantastic! How awesome! How great! What a season!!!

Meanwhile, I'd rather fucking win a real trophy - the P/L, the C/L or the FA cup.
Some of our players are on zero trophies at City and if this is what breaks their ducks then I’m not going to complain. Both Palace and Newcastle had the same issue up until recently and they’re playing with a lot of confidence now.

We’re rebuilding. Getting a winning mentality is important.

Having such a depth of squad is a real bonus compared to last year. Pep doesn't need to find a way to get this man or that man into the team, but all of our players need to be sharp and ready to play. That will mean that some players will be selected for some fixtures because they need minutes. It will mean that other favourites will be dropped for some games so they are rested and so they don't think their place is a given. I'm interested to see it develop but I do think a 'first eleven' is emerging.

Donnarumma
Nunes
Dias
Gvardiol
Ait Nouri
Rodri
Gonzalez
Foden
Cherki
Doku
Haaland

Playing Gonzalez and Rodri allows for more attacking play from the fullbacks. Foden and Cherki rotate between right and central behind Erling. If we choose only one CDM then O'Reilly takes Ait Nouri's place.

A good win with not many positives. Too much poor judgement and execution on display from City.

A lot is down to not being match fit so minutes in legs, no injuries and a result is all that matters. At times City played like a training game, trying to walk the ball into the net. Patience may be a virtue but not to be confused with knowing how to win. The subs showed their experience and impact on the team.

Your expectations for our side are far lower than mine, friend - if that sort of performance qualifies as reasonably successful.

Top 4 in the P/L is a baseline requirement - fail to achieve this and it's a disastrous season.

From there - we should expect to win one of the P/L, C/L or F/A cup trophies - otherwise it's a subpar season.

I want our fans to have high standards but I don’t want it to come across as entitled!

It was good and quite dominant but superb is pushing it.
Superb in the big picture of things ……..
Players getting minutes from long injuries
Good energy last 15 minutes first half and all of 2nd half . Cherki and Marmoush now giving us much more attacking options. Nico pulling the strings and Foden looking sharp in his cameo . 3 or 4 players didn’t step up to the mark on the night but all in all a perfect Carabao cup night which for me all in all was superb especially after a shit start to the game from a team literally thrown together and very rusty !

Plumb QF home tie boom !

+1

Winning the League Cup isn't entirely meaningless... my point is, that in the scheme of things... it's not nearly as prestigious as the FA Cup (for me by a wide margin) which is the most comparable trophy on offer.

Silverware is nice - but I'd rather finish 3rd in the P/L with no trophies but showing good progress than win the League Cup and finish 4th in the Prem by some sort of lucky or very thin margin.

Or side aspires to the best in the world - and we've achieved this, previously. Now, settling for a League Cup win and qualification for the C/L is... embracing mediocrity - from a side previously hoping to finish world best.

Absolutely
Squad strength is key to fight on all fronts .
No outstanding teams in the PL this year , Arsenal are chuddering along with their 1 nils but it is a strange league this year . All other domestic silverware wide open as is the CL imho .

Cherki good, everything else bad.

Marmoush, Doku, are the most dangerous type of poor players.

They aren’t always poor, once in a while they do something good, which hoodwinks some, buys them time and splits opinion.

It would be easier if they were just crap every game, then the decision is made.

Such a mediocre squad now.

Give your head a wobble ?
An untested and patched-up 11 with some players who have just come back from injuries, We won the game on a tricky night with their fans right up for it backing players, Marmoush did ok, Doku keeps getting kicked all over the park without protection from the referee.

We earn the right to be in the next round what more do you want ?

Disagree about Arsenal.

Arsenal are almost never, ever, ever giving up goals - watch their matches.

And in spite of numerous injuries - the Arsenal machine marches on.

If you somehow think that Arsenal aren't going to win the league by a huge margin - then you've obviously not watched their games.

How very true. I was at Wembley for the final against Wolves, 1974. We lost. I was again at Wembley for the FA Cup final, Spurs, 1981. We lost. For various reasons, I was not at any other final. I would have bitten your bloody hand off for even a League Cup final appearance in the dark Swales/Lee years. Finally, in 2018, I saw us win at Wembley against Arsenal. It was incredibly moving to me. I had finally seen my blues win at Wembley.
This competition will never have the gravitas of the F.A. Cup to me, because I'm old school (and we won our first European trophy thanks to winning that cup). But it is absolutely not to be sneered at. To me, it is worth a hundred Community Shield trophies, and yes, this will be controversial, but it's worth more than the European Super Cup, which left me pretty thoroughly unmoved. Just my personal perspective.
Furthermore, it's a terrific way of keeping players on their toes in the early part of the season, rotating and giving younger players a chance to stake their claim, and generally creating a feelgood factor if you're getting through the rounds. Several times, we've won that trophy in the spring, and kicked on partly thanks to the momentum it creates.
Will it be “enough” if we win only that and nothing else, and fail to get top four? That's another question. But I hate the idea of “binning off” one of England's two domestic cups. I think it's disrespectful, and entitled.
So — I get the firm impression — does Pep. And the players.
