I’m just interested on your opinion on the matter, because you appear to hold strong views on how much money people should have, as well as unearned income and the ‘idle rich’. Or did yesterday in any case, before this story broke.

If the rental income covers her mortgage on the property, and given the other properties that she has available to her for free, then surely a good compromise would be to cap her other income at say £40k a year.

I mean, how does anyone with no housing costs need an income of £40k?

If it wears a red rosette its kind of like a free pass, think of it as diplomatic immunity in your own country.

Why would the Chancellor have a house in an area that needs an SLA? She got an agency to rent it out for her, so hardly her fault or even negligence when you pay someone else to do everything for you.

It is parking ticket type stuff the far left and far right snowflakes lap it up though.

Areas that need an SLA are often quite arbitrary. I have a couple of houses that required an SLA. In both cases the agent told me about it and sorted it on my behalf so I would totally agree that the homeowner could easily know nothing about it if the agent wasn’t doing their job properly. In Reeves’ case, with a rental income of over £3k per month, the agent would be getting about £4k per year to make sure stuff like this gets done.

I wondered what this apparent scandal was when I saw the headlines this morning. It's not a great look but it's not material unless you accept that political discourse in this country has to be at the level of monkeys throwing their faeces at each other. Not surprised by Stride jumping on the bandwagon but Daisy Cooper at it too. I have little to no time for Rachel Reeves but this is just a non story. As for the people continuing to use the belittling 'Rachel from Accounts' tag it's simply says more about them than it does anything meaningful. It's not as some seem to think a witty or cutting allusion as to her lack of competency it's a lazy, misogynist phrase that has the (quite possibly deliberate) side effect of further eroding public authority and increasing contempt for those in public office.

And neither by the sound of it are the letting agents. It's not a good look but imagine employing a company to do a professional job and they don't. Who do you blame, yourself or them?

But I also hope there is a serious look at who leaked the information to the DM, because i'd be amazed if there isn't a confidentiality clause in their contract. Or maybe Starmer shopped her so he can get rid ;-)

Ultimately it's a nothing story unless you're BKB or Gray
